  • Applied for and recieved Retirement Extention

A few days ago started the ball rolling to change non-o visa to a retirement extension of stay.

The first step was to make an appointment with the US Embassy to recieve the notarized statement of income. This complete proceedure from making the appointment and downloading the form is done on line. You will be shown a calender with you availiable dates, select one and you are good to go. The website could use some improvement to become a bit more user friendly but not impossible.

Upon arrival, about 15 to 20 min early to navigate security, go to window a in citizen services room and let them know you are there. You will then be given a slip of paper for the cashier. Go to cashier and pay fee $50.00 or about 1500baht drop off everthing at window c and have a seat. Twenty minutes later called to window swore that the income was correct signed the form in front of officer and left.

The following day went out to Immigration at 12pm. I took the skytrain to Mor chit and took a taxi from there to Cheang Watthana arriving a few minutes before 1pm.

A nice Thai lady showed me where the copy center located in the basement, told the lady at copy center applying for retirement extension she took passport and made the approiate copies about 10 baht later out the door and up to immigration on second floor southend of building. Got a laff out of the people explaing what they wanted copied from thier passport when these women know what is necessary for each visa process.

Went back to Immigration went to information desk and they checked paper work and said go get Q number. Went thru double doors and showed paper work to Qnumber dispenser and recieved number for non-o extension. It took about 2 and a half hours before my number was called. There was a constant stream of Q jumpers who had agents and these folks would just walk into the office of the officer, even when they were helping someone. These people were helped in front of the people who had Qed up. I didn't see money exchange hands but the agents were known by the immigration officers.

Immigration officer checked my paper work, forgot to write down phone number. She did the stamps I paid the money and was given everything and was directed to another office were it was all double checked by a very cute officer.

After this walked out with a one year extension of stay for retirement. I went back to the Q line and recieved a number for permission to re-enter. This process took about 15 to 20 minutes and cost 3800 baht for a multi entry.

The whole process took about 4 hours with travel time, office crowded, but overall painless to do and it cost me for the extension of stay 1900baht and re-entry permit 3600baht and Embassy letter 1500 baht.

All of this and now good to go for one year, can come and go and no visa concerns.

Don't they want to see you with 800,000 baht in the bank or something like that?

By the way - thanks for the info...

Now that I have turned 50 I may well do this as well.

Any other details you have about the process would be gratefully read with interest.

    Useful link!

        1. BANK ACCOUNT SHOWING THB 800,000
        2. MONTHLY INCOME OF AT LEAST THB 65,000
        3. COMBINATION (BANK ACCOUNT + INCOME x 12 = THB 800,000)

For US citizens a notarized statement from the US Consular Services is accepted in lieu of actual proof of income...The only proof required by the US Consulate is our sworn word because, or course, we Yanks never lie...Which means you don't actually have to have any income or bank account...You're forgetting that this is Thailand and The USA Consulate...

As Khuna says notarized statement is your only proof needed for monthly income. The Embassy doesn't ask you of proof but the letter is a sworn statement so if push came to shove you could be in trouble if it isnot true.
There have been a few reports of immigration asking for some documentation as to income but not to often. The lady at immigration asked me what the days exchange rate was and I told her 31 to the dollar.
Bumpa I believe the British Embassy does ask for proof of your income if using the monthly amt.
The advantage to using the combined monthly income and some amount in the bank the money in bank doesn't need to be seasoned for 3 months as in using straight 800,000.
The one thing I was concerned about was proof of address since the one I use is my old girlfriends address. I do have mail that goes there and I was prepared to show the brokerage statement that is sent there but nothing was asked for and I didn't volunteer.
All-in-all a very easy process just a bit of time spent cooling your heels, take a good book.
The building Immigration is located in is very large, you can spent a bit of time walking to your destination if you enter the building other than the south entrance where immigration is located. There is signage and it is helpful

It was explained to me by Khun PigDogg recently that unless you intend to enter and leave Thailand 4 times each year, it's less expensive to get the single entry retirement visa and pay separately for the exit/re-entry stamp each time you come and go...

I'm sure he can explain it much better than I can...

Personally I just use a tourist visa...they're free...at least for now...and you can get a double entry and stay for 6 months if you like...which I used to like to do but don't like to do any longer...3 months is tops for me these days...

When my cultural bias begins to surface and I want to beat the shit out of Mrs. Kahuna, I know it's time to go home for a bit...
