As of February 2009, the line was 98% completed and is expected to be ready for service starting December 5, 2009. However, luggage check-in service at the Makkasan station will not be ready by that time.
Makkasan is, from what I can gather, the name of the station you arrive at in BKK when coming from the airport. You can transfer onto the BKK Metro Blue Line at Petchaburi Underground Station and then you're one stop from Sukhumvit.

Got this quote from Wikipedia. Hopefully it's correct and this thing gets finished this year. I've been coming to LOS since 2005 and always wondered when the fuck they were going to finish the line. Thought that the company constructing it may have gone broke. Hope to use it when I get there in mid-December.

here is the important part....who cares ?

It costs around 300 Baht to get a taxi to Sukhemvit area, the airlink might be around 100 Baht.
Are you going to carry your luggage around, transfer trains, deal with crowds, etc..  to save 200 Baht ?

          I ain't

It's a 15 min train journey compared to about 35 min by car.
Bangkok's traffic is a nightmare. I try and avoid it as much as possible. I'm giving the train a go. If the service is shit only then would I travel by taxi.

For the guys coming from overseas I agree to a point, although it works in KL, Singapore, London. etc. For someone coming in from around the country with a day sack it's a handy option. Full trials start in Dec, with services beginning in Apr 2010run by a German company as SRT couldn't sort out the Tea money split. I did have a link posted elsewhere but can't be arsed to search for it ( obviously others can't either)!!

Edit: Here ya go I'm in a generous mood tonight http://www.bangkokpost.com/news....il-link

Here we go as published in Bangkok Post

Airport Link to open for business
                      Published: 17/08/2010 at 04:42 PM
                      Online news: Economics

The Airport Link connecting Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi airport will begin commercial services next Monday, State Railway of Thailand governor Yuthana Thapcharoen said on Tuesday.

Mr Yuthana said the Airport Link's Express Service and City Line systems will run every 15 minutes from 6am to midnight.

The City Line will make eight stops across the capital starting from Phayathai before heading to the airport. Its fares start at 15 baht.

The Express Service is a non-stop journey between Makkasan and Suvarnabhumi and the fare is 100 baht per trip.

The baggage handling system at Makkasan station was still in a testing period but should be operational before the end of this year. People with many bags may have some difficulties during the check-in process, the SRT chief said.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic affairs Trairong Suwannakhiri said the new panel to study the Transport Ministry's project to lease 4,000 NGV buses for 64 billion baht should be formed by the end of this month.

"I haven't looked into the committee for studying the bus lease plan yet as the budget for the next fiscal year must be done first," Mr Trairong said.

The deputy premier said the committee should be set up after he returned from an economic conference in Hanoi on Aug 27.

He said Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum, National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) secretary-general Ampon Kittiampon and the Budget Bureau had been invited to help consider the bus lease plan.

The panel, once established, should complete its task within the two-month period set by the cabinet, he said.
Note that this will only work for travelers with small amounts of luggage for now.

Good for me when I'm in BKK - one of the stops is only a short walk from the apartment so should make it easier/quicker to get to Nana et al.

Complete waste of time going to/from Swampy as it's only 20 mins/240 Baht in a taxi.
