I voted I live in the west but actually I live in Asia but not in Thailand
I don't think I would like to live in LOS anyway, unless for really necessary reasons due to work.
Do only what you think it's good for you, and not what others think should be good for you!

I live in the west, and holiday in Thailand 4 times a year for about 2-3 weeks each time. I had considered one day moving to Thailand, but the more I think about it, I dont really think I could live there without anything productive to do with my time, the partying certainly does get boring in a very short time frame. This is how I feel at present, (change my mind regularly),chances are I will consider the move more as a base to travel the rest of the world and spend about 3-5 months in country.

Of course it does, and the people who try to live that life anyway always get burned out the quickest and heading back home in no time!!

But I would have no problems filling my time, as someone else said I could easily spend my days doing nothing; whereas doing that here in the west seems just so boring and senseless, in laid-back southern Thailand it just feels right.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

When I first came here I said I would have a crazy 6 months then settle down. It was probably closer to 3!! It's the big difference between where you LIVE and where you HOLIDAY. I LIVE in Phuket so I live a normal routine down here.I will burn through more money in 2-3 DAYS in Patts than I would in 2-3 WEEKS in Phuket- it's all relative. I'm normally out 2 times a week- C&D every other night at the mo is taking it's toll!! That's why I'm having a break tonight

I always find something to do and I get some great breaks dog, bar, and house sitting.
I couldn't give a shit how long it is until you're next holiday- I live here

Lived in Bangkok for 4 years, 29 YO, with a real career and everything.

Thailand is a hard place to live from a work point of view as mentioned on another thread a while back.

I imagine its a great place to retire in, but if you have to put up with Thai management on a daily basis, you will pretty soon turn into a bitter, twisted alcoholic.

Recently, i was in a car crash that has left me with a permanent scar on my face, the reason the taxi i was in crashed, is that the driver was watching a fucking TV on his dashboard whilst doing 80mph down Ratchada.

The police didnt think there was anything wrong with this, btw

Lived in LOS for 17 years, now holiday 2 to 3 times a year with family.

Reasons I left were many, life is better for me outside of Thailand and I don't miss living there permanently.

I am desperately trying to figure out how to move to LOS. I would need a good job to keep my sanity (and money) out of the bars too much, but I am regularly at the bars here in LA anyway, damn alcohol.

I'd love to see someone restart this thread in a different forum where it's more visible, with more focus on not only are you living in LOS, but also how you got there or are supporting yourself there, or other things along those lines.

I'm 48, have my home paid for, no debt, and significant savings, but I'd still be hard pressed to pull up stakes and move to LOS full time. Part of it is that I couldn't replace the cushy job I have here with something there, and if I give it up, I want to give it up without ever needing to worry about work again (as it would be hard to go to work again and not have it so easy as I do in today's career). Secondly, I've still got aging parents here to spend time with, and I wouldn't want to move to another continent as long as they're still alive. Time is too short and one day they'll be gone, and maybe then it would be time to consider it.

                          "time is too short ..."

Yes, but also consider that by an unfortunate play of events you might as well go before your parents too...
It is sad, but it happens too quickly, and we see it happen all the time around us... heart attack, cancer, car accident, anything really... life is deadly!

Or if your parents are lucky and in good health they might hit the 100 years mark... like my great grandmother.
That would put you in for about 30 more years - do you want to move to the LOS when you'll be 72?

Think about it... as long as you make enough money to travel 3 or 4 times back to... umm... whereever you live, from the LOS, you can spend 1 or 2 months at a time with your parents.
Once you stop working you'll have much time on your hands, so you will also be free to spend much time with your parents.

Or is there a loss of face factor?
Do they know you like Thailand?

Great comments Manarak. I don't want the thread jack but I'll quickly reply:

                            1. Parents are in early 70's and poor health. Doubtful they'll see too much of the next decade, and I'm content to stay/play here and save more money while I can.

                            2. I've got a fairly solid plan for retirement at 55, until then it's holidays only to LOS and I'll reevaluate my options at that point.

Your comments are well made though. I'm living today with the dreams of tomorrow, rather than living my dreams in the present. That's something I continue to struggle against, and your comments are a great way to point that out.

Hope to meet up with you in February in Pattaya!~

It is sad of course that they are in poor health.

We'll probably not meet in feb, because my arrival date will be either 13 or 14th. :-((

I would just move for the warm climate. When I left LOS on December 6th is was 88 degrees and sunny. Arrive in Dallas and it was 32 degrees. Plus while I was gone it got colder and I had forgotten to turn on heater for acquarium and 5 fish dead.
