  • Swine Flu in Thailand

What is the latest information about Swine Flu in LOS?

Have there been a flood of cases? Are the hospitals coping? Are the authorities warning about a possible epidemic? Is there any vaccine available in LOS? (And is it safe?)

Something interesting that I learnt this week here in Oz - this past winter, over 90% of all cases of flu have turned out to be H1N1 (swine flu).

So there is plenty of it about & it is expected to go through Asia like a dose of salts. No problems if you are fit but people are dying because it stops them breathing.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

swine flu is overrated. I had it, other than fever, which tylenol would take care of, it wasn't that bad.

(pacman @ Oct. 04 2009,16:42) Something interesting that I learnt this week here in Oz - this past winter, over 90% of all cases of flu have turned out to be H1N1 (swine flu).
I had the H1N1 vaccination last week for free at my local doctor's surgery.

Wasn't planned, but I was there for something else, so took up the offer.

I think individuals need to make a judgement based on their specific circumstances with regard to fitness and pre-existing health concerns.

I am happy to hear you recovered without mishap. Well done.

However your circumstance will not apply to everyone who gets sick with this thing.

It appears that for most, swine flu is similar to a bad cold. But those with pulmonary heart conditions are going to struggle. People have died with breathing problems.

Here in Oz, the hospitals urgently needed machines that oxygenated the blood when patients couldn't breath.

I would not like to be looking for one of those machines in the middle of the night in Thailand. Do the hospitals even have them?

Perspective. How many died of ordinary Pneumonia? This northern hemisphere winter will tell us how bad "H1N1" really is.

Of course. We are all wise after the event.

The point of my original post was to see if H1N1 had been any different to previous influenzas that have visited Thailand.

I was prompted to ask when I read about some of the deaths here in Oz. Young people in their 20's & 30's have died who were simply not considered high risk.

The second thing I found interesting - the damn thing is mutating & one medical expert has been quoted saying that this first exposure to Swine Flu will be mild compared to the super-flu that may be coming.

I don't want to be condemned for worrying about nothing, I am hoping my fellow BMs can share any info they may have.
