Anyone notice that as soon as they got into power the new government made the 2nd January a holiday.
Everyone had already written it off as a holiday anyway so why bother?

Perhaps they were just trying to be nice.

Are the bars still likely to be closed on Jan 10 for elections? I ask because maybe the airport fiasco and resulting changing of the guard might have caused the election day to change. I know it's unlikely but I've only got one evening in Bangkok (Jan 10) and I'm hoping that things will be open (for once, I had very bad luck on my visits during 2008).

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but it looks like this government has gotten a firm standing recently, and we might not have any more elections this year.....but if I'm wrong I plead TIT

(PigDogg @ Jan. 01 2009,16:42) July 7th (Tue) Asanha Bucha
July 8th (Wed) Khao Phansa - Beginning of Buddhist Lent
Anyone know if bars closed on these days?  Thinking of sneaking in for a visit.

Edit:  This is from a Pattaya newspaper last year, so maybe this will be variable based on location:

                        Buddhist holidays
On Asanha Bucha and Buddhist Lent usually bars have to remain closed, but the bar owners are still waiting for an official notice...

                          ask me on the 9th

There really is no way of knowing, "enforcement" is so random these days.
They are Buddhist holidays so its certainly possible, lately Bangkok has been more lax and Phuket more strict. Pattaya somewhere in the middle.

Bar owners are usually informed the day before.

Secrets, a straight Pattaya bar, received a letter stating that they could stay open with "limited service".  However, they decided to close the bar for those two days instead.
