Dentistry in Bangkok...

I'm spending more of my time in thailand and finding it harder to see my UK dentist. Thinking about getting check ups and dental work done in bangkok.
What do people think about the general standard of dentistry in bangkok?
Any recommendations on who to see there?

Some actual Pattaya prices:

I got my teeth cleaning at the high end dentist at Pattaya International Hospital for 1000 baht.

My girlfriend got 2 wisdom teeth removed at my high end dentist for 5500 baht or 2750 per wisdom tooth.

She thought that was too much and she just had another wisdom tooth removed yesterday at a Thai dentist for only 800 baht.

She also got her teeth cleaned at the Thai dentist for 500 baht.

I thought I would bump this thread up with some recent dental experiences of mine in BKK.. I first heard about reputable Dental clinics on an Australian TV show called Current affairs. They did a feature on all these people who were going to Thailand to get major Dental work done at prices much cheaper than we can get in Oz.
They mentioned a couple different clinics on the shows web site and I checked them out. I had already priced out in Oz what the cost of a crown would be, then got onto the site. The show also mentioned how the Dentists were trained in the U.S. and England and spoke English. Several of the people testified how the savings paid for their trip as they were getting major work done.

I communicated with Bangkok International Dental Center (BIDC) via E-mail [email protected] and found out what it would cost and made my appointment. I was going to LOS anyway and the crown needed to be done, and with a 60% savings I was happy as. The clinic is located on Rachadapisak and soi 7. When I got there I was pleasantly surprised to get right on time, and to find the cleanest Dentist office I have ever been in. this is saying something as I have been in several Dentist offices in the U.S. and Australia. The only thing that made me a little hesitant was the male dentist looked like he was in his early 20€™s and his English was no that strong. However my fears were erased as I was out in no time, and the cost was exactly as quoted. I came back 3 days later for the permanent crown and it was the same story, right on time.

Last year I took my lb to dentist in Bang Kapi for some fillings and a cleaning. Too my surprise her fillings were only 350 baht and cleaning was only 500 baht, so I have mine done as well. This same service at BIDC was 1000 baht. I guess they have to pay the higher rent for that building and location. However this office was clean and we just walked up and only had to wait short time. My lb did all the translation for me.

This trip I broke off part of a tooth from an old filling on a piece of hard rice. I€™m sure BIDC would have recommended me getting a crown, but my lb€™s new Dentist at 371 soi Sounpool, Sathorn south (Garden home Dental clinic) said they could just put filling in for 500 baht since it was bigger area. The female Dentist also spoke just as good English if not better than my male Dentist at BIDC. It was also much nicer having her smaller gentle hands in my mouth. Her and one of her two assistance were not bad to look at either. I also took advantage of a 500 baht cleaning. We just walked in, no appointment, and waited for her to finish one patient, then she made quick work of my filling and cleaning in about 20 minutes. I will go back to this practice for all future work.

These 'international' hospitals may be cheaper than the west or from your own home town but they might not be the best. Their main purpose is to generate cash.

The places that advertise themselves to foreigners tend to want to do too much when only a little will do. Hospitals are the same here. If you go into Bumrungrad Hospital with a migraine their first option is to cut your head off. It's the same with dentists.

Most local dentists here in Thailand are fantastic and extremely cheap. If you live here you will probably already have one. Mine is in Seacon Square. It's so cheap I can't even remember the prices and the lady doctor there is just excellent.

My advice is to skip these fancy hospitals and stick to a regular dentist.

One thing that impresses me in Thailand is routine dental cleaning is performed by a real dentist. In the west, I was used to this being done by a dental hygienist and the dentist only appeared to take a quick look after things were finished. I find the equipment and standard of care in Thailand to be equal to higher than the west, and cheaper. As Stogie says, you can save even more substantially by not visiting the 5-stars like Bumrungrad or BNH and still receive an excelllent standard of care. Though saying that, I must admit BNH is my favorite even though I know it is just overkill.

Ye - I had a cleaning done and it was by the dentitst too and she gave me loads of advice and did a quick examination . I paid 800 baht - probably overpriced for Thailand but, as a 2 week tourist, didn't mind. Best thing was, as it was in MBK, I was able to go straight to lunch and then on to the cinema without leaving the building
