  • Living in Rayong... Should I?

I was just looking at a map of Thailand on the internet and I noticed Rayong.  Is Rayong a good place to live in Thailand?  I would like to live close to Pattaya but far enough away to leave the action behind.  I also understand Koh Samet is also in the area and only a ferry ride away.  If I live in Thailand I don€™t want to purchase a car so what are my transportation options to and from Pattaya and Bangkok?  I would assume being close to Pattaya that there are plenty of Golf courses?  I did a search on the internet and could not find much information on renting homes or condos in Rayong.  What are the pros and cons of living in Rayong?  Thanks

No! My first LB grlfriend came from Rayong.

The main town is just one long dusty street and it gets worse after that.

No farangs and no hotels and nowhere to live.

From Bangkok to Pattaya? Bus, taxi, limo, hitchhike... depends on your budget.

LOTS of golf in Pattaya although not in the center... so expensive to get there and back, although some courses will pick you up and some hotels will ferry you out there.

Sounds like you'd be better off renting a house near a golf course near Pattaya... budget permitting of course.

Koh Samet? No one in their right mind would want to live on the island. Some people reckon it's good for a holiday - I personally think it's an over rated shit hole.

By the way - the ferry ride is cheap... but the entry to get on the island for a tourist is several dollars so you wouldn't want to 'commute' from there.

Thank you Mr. Stogie sir.  Now I know why I couldn€™t find anything on the internet, there was nothing to find.  I will take your advice and look closer to Pattaya and I do have to admit, living on a golf course does sounds like heaven.  Just curious Stogie, is there any island in Thailand that you like?

Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

              (Stogie @ Nov. 19 2008,21:43) Koh Samet?

For clarification it's free to get off the ferry at the main pier in Ko Samet but there is a charge for national park entrance down the road.

Some backpacker have been known to circumvent the fee. Not real easy to do if you're carrying lots of luggage.
However, most people want to be dropped off by songthew with their luggage so that's the easy way for enforcement.

One time they charged me the full rate but gave me a different receipt, maybe the Thai rate or kids rate. No problemo, might as well keep the boys happy.

But lots of people moving between the beach area and the town area where the 7/11, pharmacy etc. are located all the time.
