Where to get "older" DVDs

Is there a reliable place where I can find some "older" DVDs - think some that have been out for 4 to 5 years like Shrek, Monsters Inc., etc...? The trick is that they also have to have Thai subtitles and be of good quality.

I know that MBK and various markets tend to have DVDs, but its usually the newer stuff. So if anyone knows, your help would be appreciated!

You can buy them from the street vendors DP...you just have to ask...
They don't display everything they sell or have access to...

When the new Indian Jones film came out a couple months ago, I also
bought copies of the first three in the series...All with Thai subtitles...

If that fails, there is a shop in MBK on the 4th floor all the way in the back
on the right past all the phone stalls that has a great collection of older movies...
I bought a 5 DVD copy of Shogun a few months back...Again, with Thai subtitles...

In the World Trade Centre near Chidlom BTS station there are two large music stores on one of the upper floors towards the Petchburi Road end.
Both have a good selection of films both new and older ones with and without subtitles.
Also a good range of music - I have picked up CD's there that are no longer on the UK catalogue.

Sorry I can't be more specific about location but it's been a while since I've been there and I always forget which floor the're on myself.

The best thing to do is to go to somewhere like Seacon Square where they have pretty much every movie released in the last 10 years and buy from there.

The labels mean nothing but most DO have Thai subtitles. If this is important to you then go on a quiet day (Monday through Wednesday) and take a laptop or portable DVD player.

Tell them you want to buy about 12 (for the price of 10) and they'll let you test all the DVDs you want to.

If they are bored (or they like you) they'll test it on their own player and you won't need the laptop.

Be careful D-P many dvd's subtitles have little in common with what
is said on the audio...

Good point. It's sometimes the funniest thing turning on subtitles and seeing a student with level 2 English responsible for making the subtitle track.

Incredibly some movies have subtitles simply lifted from other movies. I recognised the script/story from Blade Runner on a DVD I bought called Paycheck!

Amazing Thailand/China/Asia...

The answer of course is to buy 'Soundtrack' VCDs where the quality of translation is (usually) better and they are also all originals. Although VCDs may not play outside Asia.

For legit disks - there is a chain of stores. But I forget the name. The largest branches are top floor MBK and ground floor Fortune Town.
For copies, I go to MBK or Fortune town usually; Panthip sometimes but that place is annoying with all the touts.

hi Dummy-plug, you can get a multi region dvd player check out philips as they have the best range and i used to get sony but recently there stuff is becoming crap, and now i deal with philips.

is good - they sell only original non-pirated DVDs, the Thai subtitles ought to be ok for those.

As for non-region locked DVD players, the cheap Chinese DVD players sold in North America are often multi-region unlocked.  There are also websites that publish unlock hacks for various DVD players if you choose a brand name DVD player.

After doing some research found there was a Mangpong 'Megastore' on Lad Prao Road.
Thought I would go along to see if they had a decent selection of music and films.

In a very few words - don't bother!

It's now called Mangpong Bookshop. 80% of the retail space is devoted to Thai books and only 20% to CDs, DVDs and VCDs.
The selection of music and films in the small store in Siam Paragon is better.

As for the book selection - any branch of Asia Books of SE-ED does better and usually in less space.

I mourn the loss of CD Wharehouse and the other decent music store at what was the World Trade Center - now Central World.

At the moment it looks like if you want a decent range of CD's etc. to purchase your only choice is Amazon.

I'll keep looking.
