So the police try to beak up a demonstration against the democratically elected Government who have only been in power 10 months.
Looking at the TV coverage the police are fairly mild compared to the Toxteth riots in the UK or the heavy handed cops in downtown LA.
I guess Thailand will call yet another General Election which will mean more bar closures and more uncertainty for investment and tourism. Democracy depends a great deal on being informed. For the majority of Thais their education is basic so they may not be as well informed as the electorate in the West
I hear mixed opinions from Thais (mainly wives of Farang friends and neighbours) but they do not want Thaksin back.
The emergency rules say that gatherings of more than 5 people are banned in Bangkok. So when Guess Bar is raided, we will have to disperse to the Rajah Hotel I suppose. I'm not hiding in the toilets there, for any reason
The Election Commission Tuesday voted unanimously to seek an order of the Constitution Court to dissolve the People Power Party.
The Election Commission Tuesday voted unanimously to seek an order of the Constitution Court to dissolve the People Power Party in connection of vote buying by its former deputy leader Yongyuth Tiyapairat.
The EC voted that the PPP had to be held responsible for vote buying committed by Yongyuth so the EC would file a suit with the Constitution Court, asking the court to dissolve the party.
Which means that if the supreme court agrees, and it is likely it will, then PPP will be dissolved, and new elections will have to take place ( probably in December, since that would help tourism the most )
(eltel @ Sep. 02 2008,13:28) Singapore has advised its citizens not to travel to Thailand.
So did just about everyone else..... Here is Canada's
WARNINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Thailand
Exercise high degree of caution
On September 2, 2008, the Government of Thailand declared a state of emergency in Bangkok due to ongoing violence as a result of clashes between pro and anti government forces, making public gatherings illegal and granting additional powers to security forces. There are reports of casualties. The security situation remains tense and could further deteriorate without warning. Canadians in Thailand should exercise extreme caution, follow the advice of local authorities, and are strongly advised to avoid gatherings and areas targeted by protestors. There have been significant disruptions and suspensions in air and rail services. Canadians are strongly encouraged to verify travel schedules and services with local authorities or travel service providers prior to departure as further disruptions may occur and delays can be expected. Travellers may encounter additional security measures, such as road checkpoints, and should exercise patience and plan accordingly.
Shite I never recieved any emails from the Canadian embassy in BKK. Infact I have never recived anything from the embassy in BKK. I sometimes wonder why I registered.
But back to topic. I actually support the cops on this The People Against Democracy need some good old fashion stomping.
