Well, you have quoted figures from manufacturing industries and I was talking about food. And by food I don't mean the fancy crap in expensive packaging that even the Thais can't afford or even want...

But major exports like rice are being very seriously overseen by the government... and you can expect that exporters of important food staples (chicken, rice, seafood) are going to be severely restricted if there is anything like a threat to the feeding habits of it's own population... it's already happening.

As for manufacturing - it's boom time here... Thai labour is cheap and Thai companies are easy to work with.

Good Lord, Stogie, where do you get stuff like this? Unless the comment was meant as extraordinarily subtle parody, you would be the only person I have ever heard of who holds that point of view.

Thai manufacturing for export, on the whole, has been in a downtread for years. The common view internationally is that labor costs in Thailand have risen far too fast for the poorly educated local workforce to continue to compete with poorly educated workforces elsewhere in the world. These days a national workforce is either pigeonholed as cheap or as skilled. Thais used to be cheap, but no longer. And Thais have never been considered by anyone anywhere to be skilled.

As for Thai companies being 'easy to work with'......damn, man, I'm laughing too hard over that one to type any more.

sorry some very differing opinions here, thailand may be fairly insular economically in some ways, that is compared to the west mostly.and yes thais in general spend their money on lesser things than most westerners, they are in general less materialistic.but consider this,do most thais have the resources/backup and flexability to cope with any real medium term harsh downturn in their own personal economies such as many western countries do. it is now being forecast in the uk /west that economic outlook may get far worse than first thought, and could last 2 years or more .my point ,it has allready being said here that the uk may face its worst recession since the depression.that is very significant dont u think? now what i am trying to say is that this may allready be having an effect on numbers visiting LOS ,i for one am putting off any further visits to LOS saving my pennies here in case i need em myself.the cost of deisel here in the uk has allready doubled in 12 months.............its time to hold on to see where this rocky road is heading,if im having plans on hold............i cant be alone...................less customers = higher p4p rates?

I just dont see how Thailand can be immune to world problems.

Do they have their own oil resources? If they dont, they will be hit as hard as everyone else.

Exactly KL. Petrol price has risen in Thailand from 27 baht a litre to 45 baht a litre in 6 months.

This will cause inflation to jump a lot more than 5% & very soon. Cracks are appearing in the economy with ramifications for all of us.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

I don't expect Thailand are immune to what's going on in the world... although 90% of the people who live here are supremely indifferent to it!

I don't suppose they will mind if a few less brand new cars drive over their rice paddies, eh?

                              Stogie,

With regards to property prices, here is an article I've read (just one of many) regarding rising property prices in Thailand. It states for the year prices are up approximately 5% and are expected to rise 5-10% in the next year as well. If that isn't a decent rise in property prices, I don't know what is. I respect that you are on the ground, but anecdotal evidence in one man's neighborhood isn't sufficient to base what is going on around in the economy in general.

                              http://www.irrawaddy.org/today.php?art_id=149

Additionally, here is a release from Jones Lang LaSalle, a major property real estate management firm about the strength and growth of Thai real estate.

                              http://www.joneslanglasalle.co.th/en-GB....ook.htm

If you have other reputable articles or sources that say the Thai real estate market has been in the doldrums in the past few years, then we are looking at two different sets of facts.

You do realize that Thailand is the world's largest rice exporter? Food stuffs, such as rice products, is one of this country's major industries. It is hardly what I would call "fancy crap in expensive packaging."

                                http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7317989.stm

I couldn't find the 2008 dollar value of exports, but in the article below, in 2006 prices rice exports amounted to almost $600 million USD. In 2008, with the rice prices basically up 400% from those days, I would expect it to be in excess of $1.5 billion USD easily and probably more.
