I had some idiot try to con me out of 2000baht near Saphan Kwai skytrain,
for allegedly dropping a cigarette butt on the ground!

He pulls up on a motorbike (one of those silly one you can hire for 5p) wearing a
tracksuit top..He unzips said tracksuit top to reveal an "official" policeman shirt-zips
up again, and produces a crumpled photo copied piece of paper stating-
"DROP CIGARETTE ON FLOOR 2000baht FINE-THE POLICE"

        I just burst out laughing...
a merrily went on my way

Unless it's the boys in brown in their tight fittin' uniforms I just smile, shrug my shoulders, wave my hands and say something in Latin and go about my way. Works everytime.

There's plenty of rubbish bins cunningly disguised as plant pots, drop it in there like the locals and you'll be ok as long as it doesn't hit the floor.

Failing that, there are 7-11s and Family Marts every 50-100m they always have bins out the front.

The funny thing is, I bet that the people who get caught would moan like fuck if some Asian travelled half way round the world and started throwing crap outside their house.

SORRY FOR POSTING IN WRONG PLACE.
I had actually gone out of my way to deposit the cig butt in a drain which was right next to a stinking cess pit of a building site, which had more litter and rubbish on view than a bin could handle. After the first fine when i was dropping a cig butt on the floor i've tried to be more cautious. Anyway i got a tap on the shoulder by one of the boys in brown, which was amusing as i'm over six foot, and this guy was a lot smaller than me. I know what it was about,as i noticed them size me as i walked past the Marriot, bottom of sukhumvit. I thought by putting it down the drain i was at least not littering the street. He asked me to accompany him to the police booth outside Marriot, where i was shown the card which stated in english about drains as well as street, sidewalks and roads. They asked for 2000b,

and i asked for a reciept hoping the fine would come down a bit, they did not budge.
Wouldn't have a clue as to what the reciept said anyhow. What pissed me off most was the 2000b i paid was going to be a S/T FROM GUESS bar, seeing how it was my first visit to guess.Couldn't go back for more money as misses in hotel room thinking i was out for a stroll around for a couple of hours. What i had left i had a few beers in guess and really liked the bar and what staff i saw were stunners.

So you don't actually get arrested for littering, you get an on the spot fine.

I'll have to be a bit more vigilant next time.

BANGKOK, Aug. 7 €” It is the pink armband of shame for wayward police officers, as cute as can be with a Hello Kitty face and a pair of linked hearts.

A police officer in Bangkok shows a pink Hello Kitty armband.
No matter how many ribbons for valor a Thai officer may wear, if he parks in the wrong place, or shows up late for work, or is seen dropping a bit of litter on the sidewalk, he can be ordered to wear the insignia.

€œSimple warnings no longer work,€ said Pongpat Chayaphan, acting chief of the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok, who instituted the new humiliation this week.

€œThis new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offense, no matter how minor,€ he said. €œKitty is a cute icon for young girls. It€™s not something macho police officers want covering their biceps.€

(marshal @ Jan. 17 2008,18:07) SORRY FOR POSTING IN WRONG PLACE.

Same thing happened to me at corner of soi nana and sukumvit. Had to walk with policeman to the booth in front of Marriott. Explained to them that I threw the butt in a drain. They showed the card, said it was 2000 baht and asked me to come to the police station. I knew that would take at least 2 hours so asked them to show me the butt I threw away, as proof. As this was not possible , it was in the drain, I asked them if 200 baht would do the trick. They looked at eachother and nodded yes. So luckily I got off with a tip of 200 baht and a new experience with the Thai Police.
