I seem to recall you cant be gotten out of the place even when they DONT sell smithwicks or whatever it is. Clearly its the ooohing and ahhhhinng from the pool table that must be keeping you there

A good pint of Guinness is great , but a bad one
Im sure Dave can back me up on this but there is a art in pulling a good pint of Guinness , and you should be waiting a good 5 mins to let it settle (not handy if you are dying for a drink )
A lot of other factors ie - temperature etc plays a big part .
Living in Ireland makes you a bit obsessive about the black stuff , especially when you get breast fed it
