The Guess Bar

I have been a long time lurker and have used this forum as a great resource of information over the past couple of years.
I usually get to Thailand once a year and i have just returned from a trip. I had been to the old Guess bar and loved it, so my first destination when i hit the ground was to have a cold beer and check out the new place. I walked in with a smile on my face, it was pretty quiet and was charged upon by about 4 of the girls, i thought i had walked into the wrong bar and i quickly retreated to the outside smoking area hoping to get some grace. The girls followed and started the whole "i go wit u", "u take me". Whilst i understand the girls are there to work and it was getting late, the place was empty, i thought this was supposed to be a place where you can chill out, take a look and have a bit of a chance to see what is on offer without being set upon. Maybe they smelt the "fresh of the plane meat" and is different for those who are regulars, but to me nothing seperated this place with any of the Nana Plaza places. I did try it again about 5 days later, same story. Jay was outside on her computer this time,perhaps they might be a bit more laid back whilst she is around. i had one drink and went on my merry way to find fun elsewhere.
This is just my little story and i certainly do not want to put anyone off going here, the more bars the better, but if the claim of this place is a v.i.p lounge, i certainly did not find it to be my experience.
I'll try it out again on the next trip as i do like the concept of the Guess Bar when and if it gets back to being the place it had built is reputation on.

The Bar is Fine & if you go in every night the girls get used to you & leave you alone.Still by far the most laid back bar in the Nana area,the only time I had 4 girls "on Me" ,so to speak was My first night after that, Guess is exactly what it promotes it's self as.It will be My first & last port of call on My next trip, thats for sure.

this is true, after a few visits you become invisible..you gotta expect a little attention the 1st time you go to an lb bar, it adds to the excitement.....once u get back home you'll be kicking yourself that you didn't bar fine the 4 of them

guess bar is far and away the most laid back lb bar in the nana area,just how most bms like it . it will be my first port of call in september,cant wait

Maybe some people just dont understand the message - its not a VIP bar and has never claimed to be - its just a regular bar - same same but different from anything else but as it charges just over 100b for a beer its hardly in the VIP category like bar Su in the sheraton where I sat drinking 280b ++ Heienkens the other day. What seems to work is the relaxed feeling - but make no mistake this is a P4P bar - which would I would have thought mean they have one thing on the agenda as far as the staff are concerned - they aint chatting for the fun of it. Some people may have *felt* its like a VIP bar but that was never the intention - its basically just a hi(gher end) beer bar which focuses on the quality of the staff employed. I think the comments above seem to be view its positioning as being as spot on as far as any one could hope for and when it moved - the focus changed - that has already been discussed - the staff multiplied by large volume - its less "clubby" than before - that wont be changing as the bar is doing far more volume than ever done in in the old location. Some of us do have issue with the music, lightng and volume but for sure I know Jay aint going to change anything as she counts the dollars in the till and she is saying this new method of operation is way better than the old model.

Indeed , back home in dear old blighty the thought of a gang of ladyboys competing over your barfine sounds very appealing does it not ?

Why do people complain about these things ? If you went into Guess and the girls ignored you most guys wouldn't be best pleased either .

So the girls torture you for a barfine or a drink , if you don't fancy either just say no , they are a nice bunch of girls , its not a problem .

Cheap (for Bangkok prices ) drink , a comfortable bar , no bill padding , a more relaxed atmosphere than the Nana bars and fun girls , its hard to beat .

Lets face it every bar will have good nights and bad , and maybe this forum has built the place up a little too much , but for me its still my first stop in Bangkok .

What would I give right now for - Mimi mooning at me from the stage , Jane making big eyes at me , Pang kissing me sensualy and stroking my cock , and Jenny wanting to kill me once again

To be ignored by the girls unless I call them over is exactly what I want.

And that's exactly what I got on my first ever visit a couple weeks ago.

Jay wasn't even there and yet no attention we didn't want. This what the late afternoon so not sure what it's like in the evening.

Now what's really strange is that we weren't mobbed at the door in Obsessions either.

I think one guy walking in alone is more likely to get unwanted attention.

But i think JimSlim is right; most guys don't want to be totally ignored. I realize I'm the exception that goes to these places to socialize with my farang friends and the bar would go out of business if it catered to the few guys like me.

FWIW,the opening observations in this thread struck a cord.

I too had visited the old location in Suk Plaza,and recently dropped in to the Soi 4 re-incarnation.

It was late in the evening,I had arrived in town from HK,and wanted to chill,get my bearings,and sort out some company for the night.

As soon as I walked into Guess,I was mobbed by half a dozen pushy LBs.Just attempting to buy a drink became an ordeal,as hands grabbed my arms while I stood at the bar.It was at best impolite,at worst intimidating.I wasn't allowed to settle whatsoever,was surrounded immediately,and felt pressurised from the moment I stepped through the door.

Like the commentator above,I finished my drink as fast as possible,having retreated to the outside smoking zone to avoid the unwelcomed "you go with me?" chorus.

I'm no pussycat btw,and confident in any environment,but what happened that night wasn't comfortable. It felt desperate....very very mercenary,and so unnecessary.

Will I return? Maybe....maybe not.

Sounds like the regs have negotiated a way through the free-for-all,and can spend time without this pressure,but in all honesty I found the situation unpleasant and unnecessary.Way too pushy,and no observation of personal space,or any allowance that I can make my own mind up without the immediate and in-your-face hard-sell even before I had sat down to take it all in.

I doubt the protocol will change,but that kind of hassle was unsettling. How can anyone relax in such circumstances?

Much more preferable,in my case,would be to let a new face settle down before making any commercial approach. But it's not going to happen,is it?

Personally (as said before) I prefered the old Guess Bar perhaps due to it's more 'intimate' nature however, life moves on, none of us live in the past.
So far as the new place is concerned, I have precious little to complain about apart from Nan being bar fined before I arrive
Also guys, if you don't like the music then take your own compilation CD as I do

I like the new place better, but the music sucks and way too loud. The old girls don´t bother regulars, it´s the new ones trying to get barfined but i think they are alot less pushy than the Nana venues. (Except Top, she´s probably the most annoying and pushy along with Dear in Stringfellows i´ve ever met).
The place feels more like your local than all other bars in Bkk.
The bathroom is from hell though.

pretty much agree about liking the old place more for its feel and look, and while the new places is a little shabby, its still a great bar and have had many a great night in there and hope to continue to do so in the future.
