  • The Guess Bar 2008 ~ A Review...

The (new?) Guess Bar now has been in operation for a few months and the hurried move from it's previous location seems to have settled down into a routine.

Don't go to the new one expecting the old one. These are two different clubs set up for two different purposes.

Briefly, the pros are... girls, prices and location.

There are more girls and the clone mold of Peter Gabriel video models has been cast aside for a more varied troupe of P4P entertainers. The chances are (unless you like post ops) you will find something to your liking.

The girls as a whole are laid back and helpful. It's not an aggressive or annoying place to go as far as the girls are concerned. They seem to have taken on the mantle of 'waitress/hostess' as and when the need arises, too.

There are one or two annoying ones, but even they quickly get the picture. There have been rumours about the ages of the staff so - as in any bar - protect yourself and check those IDs, or at least get the hotel to.

The location is better... Not the actual bar, but its' place on the map. If you are summoning the energy and will to go to The Shitpits then The Guess Bar is a good place to start... especially now that Lucky Lukes is gonna be hotter than hell outside during the summer!

It's CHEAP! The prices are very, very good and are all clearly displayed on the bar and tables. You will NOT purposefully get ripped off in this bar, although I have heard that the newer girls are taking liberties with some tabs!

    Briefly, the cons are... NOISE!

These virtues have come at a price. The new bar is smaller and doesn't have the classy and exclusive 'Club' feel of it's predecessor.

The noise from the speakers is simply unbearable and while unwelcome requests to the staff to turn it down work for a few minutes, generally The Guess Bar (and traditional Thai) adage of "If it's loud, they will come!" is at work here.

Having said that - a guest last night brought in his own CDs which they were happy to play - so if you want reasonable music at a tolerable volume, then bring your own and stand outside! !!!

There are two pool tables. I didn't used to mind this before but now I hope and pray that they burn down. The childish and agonizingly high pitched squeals of excitement from them is unbearable and there's no one able or willing to control it. This isn't just the odd squeal after a lucky shot - it's a campaign of noise deliberately aimed at annoying the customers. A bit like monkeys throwing their shit at zoo-visitors.

Here again - to really enjoy the fruits of this bar you are better off outside it!

Still no foot rail... I don't know why... they can afford it. And it would add to the comfort of the customers although you get the feeling these days that the customers are just there to pay for the staff having a 'youth club' at their disposal!

    Summary...

If you want a cheap place to pick up great girls and find some P4P company then The Guess Bar is perfect. If you want to go there and meet friends to relax and chat then you'll be looking elsewhere after the first drink.

The place needs a 'mamasan' desperately.

Still the best place in town but could be a lot better with a firm hand and a willingness to do right by the customer.

Well i think its still the best place to go and meet friends and relax , certainly nowhere in Nana comes close in my opinion .

The Music is still not as loud or annoying as Obsessions or Cascades .

You want to burn down the pool tables ? Why not try playing a game or two , its really a cool pastime in a bar

But yes the new Guess bar is short on space and so has a different feel to it , compared to the old Guess Bar .

I like the pool tables and I enjoy playing the game, too. It's the screeching noisy byproducts that I can't stand.

Like I say - Still the best place in town, but the place needs a boss.

Thanks for the update Stogie, I'll have to check it out for myself in May.
I don't get it, is this a magic show?

            Why,whats wrong with Gong?

My swedish friend went in there last week, early evening, and was greeted by Gong through the loud music.
"I´m fine thanks", my friend replied.
Gong says: "I asked what you want to drink, not how you are".

Love it. Why waste time on smalltalk when you got a business to run! .

Great review SB. Don't know if I'd want a mamasan tho. That's one feature that sets it apart from the NEP bars which I like. Been to the old Guess bar before and I like this one better. Sure the decor is less expensive looking, but it's not as dark and to me, it's more cozy. I agree about the pool table although if it wasn't there, they'd be playing cards or doing something else to pass the time.

i like the bar, i went the other night and they had some good music on, think it was new order? the girls are very nice too, and the drinks very reasonable! never been to the bars in the nep as they look a bit too daunting! i like the more laid back approach to this bar

I just spent 12 days in Bangkok and visited Guess once on my first night (planning to hit there at least another 5 times).

The girls not playing pool looked bored to tears.
                  I didn't bother returning.

I went there a few times last week and the place had perked up from my last visit a month ago.

                    Enjoyed myself.

Having one pool table is an improvement.

The Guess Bar is a great place, IMO.   The new arrivals are much appreciated by TTChang ...   and Jay told me last night that some more are on their way

Mind you, the drawback with so many (and the higher turnover) is knowing who is who .... I think even Jay has this problem.   And whether you can see the same girl the next time you go in.  Lilly (or maybe LeeLo ?!) and Ice (Icey?) are both on my 'to do' list, definitely.   Yo was (is ), but 2 of my mates have got there first, so I know my place

The squealing round the pool table is still irritating, and some quiet evenings the girls look very bored.  But I sense that Jay delegating staff recruitment to Gong has tempered the 'KC3 effect'.   I like Gong (no, not   , Stogie, don't fret)  ...   and to think that Stogie would have had him sacked in Month 1

I agree...almost too many new girls now...Very difficult for this old guy to remember names...and faces for that matter...

But in my opinion, the new look Guess girls have certainly rekindled my love for the bar...Not that I ever minded going to Guess, it is easily the best LB bar in BKK,  but I gave up barfining girls from there over a year ago...It became my comfort bar...Fortunately or unfortunately, that changed this year...it was unfortunately involuntarily changed back last eve by the little thing I was barfining..they do make their choices and I've been snubbed...so it will become my comfort bar again...which is a good thing...except that my addiction continues to lurk off in Isaanville...

                          TT help me...

Nonetheless, it is my first choice of bars to visit in BKK and likely always will be...

And I do agree...the pool table squealing is as irritating as all fuck...It soon drives everyone out to sweat in the outdoor smoking area...

Good couple of updates by guys who go there a lot and see it at all hours...

My last trip there was great. The music was not annoying or loud. One of the pool tables HAS burned down and made way for a nice lounge area...

Still - many of the punters still prefer the smoke and heat MORE than actually being inside!

I wonder if they'll eventually figure out that the noise from the pool table players is the reason for this.

                            Still the best in Bangkok...

Apparently noise = activity = easier for customer to relax is Jays latest view (and probably drowns out the squeeling). I have given up trying to educate her on farang ways and just sit outside now ogling the new talent that I cant touch - probably the key to a perfect relationship. Now she just needs to get a service girl positioned outside who as someone said, when he asks for a beer, he is not shown the girls cock and told "no its small size"

                              Cheers
