(bigmick22 @ Jan. 03 2008,23:27) Damn you Monkey - when I clicked the quote button, your post said differently

Sorry, it just seemed that I was repeating what others had said.

Naang Faa, if one of your friends has a decent connection you could get a wireless router (if they're not too far away) and share.

I don't know if Bangkok has a 3G network. If it doesn't, your mobile data card might still work but will run at 2G speeds (slower thn fixed line dial-up - i.e. crap)

If you are going to be un BK full-time and do have landline, then maybe getting Broadband with wireless router is way to go 0 if you can wait for the installation/setup. Also, woulkd be great if your roomies could share cost too

The Asus Eee has to be the most successful marketing campaign in recent times. What with a tiny screen, almost unusable keyboard, virtually no persistent storage and low battery life how can this be called a notebook computer? It is not it is just a toy!!!!

For those of you sucked in by the hype don't worry you were not alone. Although I did not buy one I know many people who did and after they did the math about how much it would costs them to turn it into something workable they realized they could have bought something like a Acer aspire 5315 or even the Dell inspiron 1501.

                  Yawn...

I have found mine to be an indispensible work tool.

Different folks for different strokes, eh?

Obviously you have never owned one.

Why yawn because someone doesnt agree with you?

I think it is just a toy too.

I have owned one and have now sold it for the same reasons as above. too small, etc.

I now have got a cracking Sony Vaio which is indisensable!
seriously pig headed, arrogant, double standard smart ass poster!

For those of you sucked in by the hype...
The yawn was aimed at this misinformed hyperbole that this uninformed poster has used, and NOT on the semantics of the facts of his argument.

Of course there are some that won't get on with a gadget like this... That doesn't make it a 'toy' and nor does it infer that those that DO like it are getting 'sucked in.'

In my mind this is the best 200 quid I have spent in many years.

                        No hyperbole I am afraid.

The marketing all started back in June last year when it was announced at Computex on the back of the OLPC (One laptop per child), initially they said they would not sell it to the public but of course that was just to get people to plead for it and generate publicity. Then they said they would sell it via special tender process then finally they apparently "caved" and decided they would sell it to the general public after all.

For your 200 quid you could buy an Acer Aspire 5315 which has Intel Celeron M 540 1.86GHz CPU and a 15.4" WXGA screen. It comes with 1GB DDR2 SDRAM expandable to 2GB a 80GB HDD and an integrated DVD-Writer and Wi-Fi. Surely you can't argue you got value for money? Sounds like you are the one that was misinformed.

Totally unsuitable for my requirements, so that would have been a waste of 200 quid and NOT "value for money!"

I'd done my homework carefully and my research paid off. I now have a fully functional computer which is totally portable for about 200 pounds!

I was informed correctly and got exactly what I wanted.

Now the Acer Aspire 5560 that I already had prior to that could remain at home rather than be carried about the world.

You should think before you post in future!

EEE is a perfect travel companion when I go to LOS. Since it's so cheap its not a big deal if it get stolen. Since it is so small it's no hassle to bring it in my bag. Since it's relative powerful I can even do some small job tasks "in the the field" if necessary. My biggest complaint is the battery life.

I can understand people who want to use the EEE as a "normal" laptop is not very happy since it's rather small, but to me it's just a supplement and I'm an internet addict so I bring it on all my trips. I also bring a 12" X60s Thinkpad for some more serious work but this is an expensive computer and even at 12" its a little big to bring around.
                            Back in LOS in February

Maybe the Acer does not fit your requirements fair enough but there are many better machines that would for the same price range. If you are happy with it fine but most people I know who bought one are not.

So I am a wanker because I disagree with you and offer a different opinion? Glad to see you treat new posters with such a warm welcome.

So what exactly should I think about before I post in future?
