First thing I did was extend the memory from 512 to 1024. That stick was 1,000 baht. (So if anyone wants a DDR2 512 laptop stick let me know!)
Then I installed all the programs that I need on it. Most of them are small so they don't take up too much space. I also installed a few on the 'D' drive (4 Gig card which I bought for 1,100 baht.)
So basically I've got an 8 gig solid state laptop with Windows XP business edition for a little short of 15,000 Baht.
With some adjustments to the recycle Bin settings, paging file and moving the "My Docs" folder to the D drive I've clawed back a bot of the 'C' drive. With everything installed it's 3 gigs used so I have 1 gig left for usage, plus of course almost 4 gigs on the card.
I also set the drives to 'compress' rarly used files and disabled the 'Windows Restore' function. If you have a gig of memory you could probably disable the paging file all together. If you are really clever you can 'purgecahe' and also delete the page file completely.
I didn't... But I set the page on both levels to 300 MBs.
Of course you can also plug in an external drive (either HDD or optical.)
The wireless feature is excellent and I can pic up the signal someways off. But of course the closer you are the better...
With many websites (this forum for example) you'll maybe have to work the sideways slider as well as the vertical one when viewing pages. Most sites that I have been to are very managable but there are exceptions... NFL.com is one of them.
A lot of Windows for making Windows adjustments are too big for the screen and I haven't figured out how to move them up so I can click the "Done" or "Exit" button. (I use tab, then enter and just guess and hope for the best!)
I don't play games but I'll bet that this computer doesn't do a good job of playing them. I tried to play 'DXBall' and of course it couldn't resize the screen and failed to start. Solitaire works nicely, though!
The sound is 'tinny' of course, but it's still louder than any other laptop I've used. Actually for listening to the BBC Radio 5 Live radio online I plug it into the 'line in' feature on my Sony boombox. Works great.
Watching movies wirelessly through shared drives is a treat. The video is clear and not choppy for both movie downloads and porno!
If I could choose any improvements I'd say that find a way to install a much larger C drive (32 gigs would be nice.) Also - at the risk of losing the speakers elsewhere I'd say an inch bigger screen and a res of 800 x 600 would work better.
Other than those two points I can't think of any way to make this a more perfect 'travelmate!'
Sounds like a useful supplement to a regular laptop or desktop for doing light work during travel and staying in touch.
What kind of speed is the 4G SD card? It must be one of the new high capacity SD cards, that is a pretty good price for it!
Kind of tempted to pick one up when I visit in Dec, if there are any left! Was thinking about buying a better spec laptop, as my current IBM R40 is now coming to 4 years old, with a Centrino 1.3 GHz it is a bit slow to run Adobe Photoshop and video editing.
If I pick up the Asus, I would delay upgrading from my old laptop.
Do you plan on taking the Asus with you when you visit the UK?
Here's something neat that I just discovered about the new Asus EEE 701...
Instead of scrolling up and down a page or document using arrows or the left click button down while mousing the scroll bar there's a much easier way...
It takes a few minutes to get good at it though...
On the small finger pad on the right hand side is a vertical line. I thought it was just for decoration at first, but if you tap there twice a small up and down scroll icon appears and you can slide up and down a page easily with one finger from the scratch pad.
Here's the bonus, though... you can do the same thing horizontally by tapping on the bottom of the scratchpad and sliding left and right...
Now why don't ALL laptops have that cool feature... (especially the smaller ones!)

They do well at least all the laptops I have ever had you can scroll using the touch pad.
To keep up with the Katoeylovers and Stogie Bears I bought one also...Don't have it yet...on backorder in USA, but I should have it in a week or so...I can get the macho black model now, but I'm holding out for the faggy pearl white model...

I'm resurrecting this old thread cause I gotta bitch and I'm also a bit drunk...
So I finally received my faggy pearl white model and soon discovered that I couldn't deal with the Linux operating system so I wanted to install XP...so I have a licensed copy of XP but no way to install it...so I went out and bought a "Slim Portable External Super Multi DVD Rewriter" so I could load the windows OS in...and then I soon discovered that the flash drive I bought couldn't hold shit...so I went out and bought a super duper portable hard drive...and now that damn thing with all the periferals weighs as much as my old heavy laptop...
But it sure is cute...
