            Excellent read

            Back on topic:

The IPad is crap as it lacks so many of todays essentials.
... but there are still plenty of muppets who will buy it regardless

Isn't that the point of the iPad? The lack of essentials!!

That way it can't be confused with anything else. It isn't trying to be a laptop. As Jobs says - it is the best web browsing experience ever.

Carry it around with you wherever you go. Sit it on your lap & start browsing. Brilliant!!

Plus the lack of add-ons keeps the price down. At $499, this thing will fly out the door.

I also read "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". That paean to the beauty found in mechanical simplicity has a perfect analogy in the iPad.

This thing is destined for the Smithsonian where it will be showcased along with all the other groundbreaking designed objects of the past 100 years.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

                From Stephen Fry's review:
I€™m not advocating dumb gullibility, but it is has always amused me that those who instinctively dislike Apple for being apparently cool, trendy, design fixated and so on are the ones who are actually so damned cool and so damned sensitive to stylistic nuance that they can€™t bear to celebrate or recognise obvious class, beauty and desire.
He wouldn't be talking about anyone around here, would he?

It provides nothing I don't already have, so therefor serves no purpose.

What functions does it provide that people don't already have on other devices? - None.

                  .. Simples.

ummmm, I can do this with my small Acer notebook .......and it's even smaller than this tablet thing and weighs less.

499? My Acer was 13000 baht, about 420 dollars.

Cheaper, better, and won't break down like the crap made by those people in california.

best part? doesn't have that stupid little bitten apple logo on it!!!

I agree that a Netbook would be cheaper & more versatile but when it comes to the viewing experience, I don't see how something with a small screen in a folding lid could be more comfortable or preferable to holding a nicely weighted, tactile flat "tablet".

I have just read a long article by a techie about the iPad who was completely underwhelmed by the whole thing & now that I know some of its shortcomings (it takes a new MicroSIM card requiring another contract with your telco plus some other disappointing details) I am in full agreement with him.

However, the iPad has beautiful styling (IMO) & will be the latest must-have gadget for the upwardly mobile trendoids around these parts. I can't justify one myself but the jury will be out until I get to hold one. Then it may be another story.

Regardless of my decision, I suspect it is another winner for Apple. Plus as the techie wrote, it will be versions 3 or 4 that will be the one to own, when some of the more objectionable design faults are sorted out.

I remember quite vividly that this also happened with the earliest iphones.

First people were dissapointed and angry at all of its flaws and then it got better and better over time and that will most likely be the case with this deal.

why be the guinea pig for this latest toy when you can wait until 2011 and get the newer, modified version when all the bugs will surely be worked out?

notice I said "you'' and not ''me'' I can't be converted.......

I waited for iPhone 3 (3GS), but for the iPad I am getting version 1.

Will 2 and 3 be better, duh of course they will. But I don't want to wait a year, I want something I can load a book on and read anywhere ( I like books, really I got hundreds of 'em - but here in Bangkok its not easy to find what you want - and technical ebooks usually cost 1/3 of the print version but reading those on a laptop is awkward ).
A video player that can last 10 hours with a big screen- yea I want that
                          Games - Love 'em
Web browsing - no brainer, iPhone is great for surfing but it is small ( lack of Flash does suck )
Mobile Computer - the iPad won't replace a laptop, but if I need to remote login to a computer when I am on the road the iPad will do.

I don't consider myself an Apple groupie (just got in an argument with one who took offense at me criticizing Jobs for not having a camera in the iPad -- JD you can probably guess who I am talking about). But as someone who uses Windows, Linux, MacOS and other stuff you have never heard of - Mac is the best experience. And I am willing to pay more for it. For the iPad I am sure it will be better than whatever HP and Microsoft come out with, even if theirs is cheaper.

In short, FOR ME, this is a great device.
If you think I am buying it just because it has an Apple Logo on it, then you're just plain wrong.

If you don't want a media tablet- then you are not the audience
If you thinking a netbook is more flexible, works better and has better battery life - thats your take - I disagree.
If you instinctively hate anything Apple, then enjoy your Zune with the other 2 people who bought one.

Exactly; and that is all that matters ..... YOU like it and want it [and apparently need it] so go get one.  For us who don't need one and don't care, it's no big deal.

And as has been said MANY times on this message board;  if we all just agreed with one another and patted each other on the back and said "uh-huh'' all the time, this would be a pretty boring place!

Disagreements and good-natured arguments are actually more fun.

*Note; I have a ZEN by Creative, not a Zune, whatever that is.

Stogie has one also, newer and better than mine; we must be the only 2
