Ringflash is really old school. I used to use one when I have my studio back in the early 90's. But mine wasn't portable as it was a Speedotron Light attachment for my studio kit. It gave a specila look for fashion photography. Brings back some old memories - some good, some great...and some bad ones.

Absolutly right. That was the intended purpose of ringflash. Most dentists that I know use ringflash for their work.

If my memory serves me right, it was a french photographer who started experimenting with ringflash in the late 70's for fashion work. As usual, it fell out of 'fashion' then the technique made a come back in the 80's. It is branded as a gimmick in the fashion photo industry.

I only mentioned it because of my own use of ringflash for my work at the time. I was a fashion photographer in Canada for 8 years before defecting to graphic design/art direction.

It was a good time in my life Looker. But, as I mentioned earlier, it had it's bad time as well. Hence the reason I got out of that business.

When you start your career and make 150-200$ per hours and it drops to 50$ an hour because the design/magazine want to pay some graphic designer to tweak your own photos  it's time to consider a career change. They (art directors and whatnot) are to cheap to pay - they cut your pay and use the rest to pay the computer geek. Hence the reason I started doing graphic design. Like many other photographers.

Few years later, I made another career change. I went back to school at 39 and studied industrial design. At least my art background is still valid. Now I work for a company who fabricates special doors for aircraft hangers, mining industries and naval ship yards.  I am currently working on a zoo project - creating hydraulic doors for a polar bear habitat.

Never thaught that I was going to design doors for polar bears when I signed up in commercial photography. Funny how life changes.

Back to the subject at hand. Here is (or was) my main work horse. My little Nikon F4s with my favorite lense for fashion. Nikon AF 85mm F1.8 I also have my Nikon AF 80-200mm F2.8 zoom lense.

I still get heart broken for selling my Pentax 6X7 kit. It was a pure joy to see those big negatives with pretty little girls on them

The second photo was taken with my F4s with the 80-200 F2.8. - Kodak Tri X film pushed to 3200 ASA for the grainy look.
