TV SERIES - best now / best ever?

I watched NYPD Blue a lot in the early 90's but I still like CSI Miami a lot better. Homicide was pretty good too and I'm glad Law & Order: SVU imported Richard Beltzer from Homicide. I personally like that show a lot but everyone I talk to says pshaw, its boring, whatever.. so I didn't mention it.

I can't watch more than a few seconds of Seinfeld. Just totally obnoxious people doing inane things thinking they're clever. But 'Friends' is slightly worse.

I love all the C.S.I. series and watch at least one on most days given all the channels there is on TV now, Law & Order Criminal Intent is another I enjoy with Detective Robert Goren  

On the    side Taggart and Cracker are my favourites

I like the Law & Order SVU. Also for a comedy TV series it would have to be Two and a half men. Charlie Harper is my hero.

The Office - UK and US both good but the UK version is simply sublime and cringe-tastic
Extras - fat boy shows he can do it again
Luther - agree with Pentire, very appealing after a slow start
Sherlock - just started in UK. A great start...

As for CSI Anything - such an annoying programme. As for that ginger cunt, slowly peeling his shades off and answering: "Or maybe that's what they want us to think..."

Back in the day, the Belz was big on the NYC comedy club circut but his comedy career just never quite took off.

One of his routines was singing "Sloppy Blowjob" to the tune of Stormy Weather. Maybe that"s why.

Those days you could see guys like Belzer, Joe Piscipo, Bill Maher, Gilbert Gottfreid in small intimate venues.

The best two series/dramas from the Uk I think were Edge of Darkness, and Traffik, both re-made by Hollywood
-the UK version of Traffik with Bill Paterson is based in the UK, Germany and Pakistan, the very good single film re-make with Michael Douglas is based in the US and Mexico with a superb performance from Benicio del Toro. The UK version is a bit dated and the soundtrack by Shostakovich is a bit too intense, but it is still relevant given the role played by Heroin in both Pakistan and Afganistan, and it offers more depth and detail. I would never knowingly watch a film with Mel Gibson so I can't comment on his Edge of Darkness.

The original The Prisoner has a lot of admirers...

In the US I don't think anything comes close to The Wire although it seems the audiences/critics prefer either The Sopranos or Mad Men' haven't seen either.

Its Garry Shandling is the only funny US programme they have made in that country since I Love Lucy...

The Worst:
UK: Doctor Who, Sherlock
US: Stark Trek, Friends, Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Happy Days etc etc too

Are there programmes that don't travel? -not just the vacuous drivel of The Office, but Boys from the Blackstuff -anything with US sports like Baseball or Gridiron is never going to go far in the UK.

I think most Americans would be disappointed or at best bemused by the UK version of The Office.

Never got into Mike Nelson when he took over. I tried to, I really did, but Joel was the man for me. Never cared for season one or the radio shows, either.

(I have all the Joel Hodgson ones on my hard drive if you are missing any!)

Oh gosh, I can't believe I forgot "The Office"!

I enjoy the US version, but the Ricky Gervais original is so much better. Cringe-inducing as it was, it was a classic that the US version cannot touch. I also loved Extras, and there's a hilarious animated version of the Ricky Gervais podcasts with Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington that's playing on HBO now here in the States.

Gervais is a genius, but I think I enjoy his writing partner Stephen Merchant nearly as much!

P.S. - as for radio shows, were you perhaps referring to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? MST3K was never a radio show.

Hey, speaking of Hill Street Blues, does anyone remember "Cop Rock" It was only on for part of a season and was immediately cancelled. After HSB, Steven Bochko (the producer/creator of Hill Street, ER, etc.) decided it was time to bring back the musical, and created a crime drama musical with songs by Randy Newman. Cops investigating murders would suddenly break into song.

I don't believe it's ever been re-run. I used to have a couple of episodes on a Beta cassette but even if I found it I haven't seen a BETA VCR in decades.

Jersey Shore maybe entertaining like watching a auto accident, you have to watch & then feel like crap.

Agree with Sopranos, Gary Shandling, Simpsons & British version of The Office : These are great television.

Chinaman, if you liked "Lucky Louie" check out "Louie" on FX.... not for everyone, a bit dark in it's take on things, but I record it, too good to last very long on commercial tv.

My personal faves that I would recommend: Taxi, Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations (& his earlier "A Cooks Tour"), Frasier & Mary Tyler Moore were also well written sitcoms.

Altho I never watched it (trying to limit my boob toob time) a lot of smart people said The Wire was a great show & worth watching.

If you enjoyed the IT crowd look up another great Channel 4 comedy "Peep Show" It's not what it sounds like but very funny. It used to be shown on a friday night in the uk and almost made it worth being home on a friday night.
