Culture, tends to dominate individual preferences.

Why not have ice cream for breakfast and cereal in the evening?

Why not wear togas? Why do many business folk still wear useless suits and ties?

    So and and so on.

I hate suits and ties. Neckties are the worst article of male attire ever invented. Togas sound like a better way to go. I see some Arab looking dudes sitting outside Yensabai Mansion sometimes, wearing long white togas and cute little white caps to go with them. Why couldn't that be formal business attire instead of fucking suits and ties?

Only problem, I could see with a toga would be if you had a boner that wouldn't go away. You're walking around looking like you have a tent pole under your toga. Maybe some guys would just be comfortable sticking out in front like a form of advertising: "hey, I'm horny over here, can anyone give me a hand?

Mary telling Joseph that god made her pregnant has to be high on the list too.

Maybe I sound insensitive but its not the case at all. I do care!  But if I had to live my whole life based on how everyone might be sensitive to me.. I would not be living my life as I want it. So you can accept me and my flaws as I am or you can't.

I was thinking the same thing but thought it wouldn't be the biggest con since the truth of the matter is, it did exist once when Eisenhower was president and the middle class flourished. But now it is a myth.

(Tomcat @ Jul. 01 2010,18:23) Diamonds are scarce... haha.. what a con this one has been
But what a highly profitable con it has been.

The line that diamonds are rare was dreamt up by an advertising copywriter. And for a brief time it appeared true. However the facade needs to be maintained to justify the high prices that in turn provides employment & income for the entire diamond industry.

The WTO with the aid of anti-monopoly legislation has attacked De Beers for running the most successful cartel on earth. Plus the EU, the US & other affected organisations have all considered anti-trust suits against De Beers.

They all backed down when the ramifications were explained to them. Poor countries that may find diamond deposits will be denied life-changing profits if diamonds became just another commodity. 1000's of shops & those employed in them would be collateral damage if diamonds suddenly dropped in value.

The cost of destroying De Beers is far too high.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

The American Dream. IMO it all started going badly with the assassination of JFK. Had he lived then America's involvment in Vietnam would have been unlikely to happen.

LBJ allowed himself to be bullied into bombing Hanoi by senior Military men. The 5 star Generals who paraded around the Pentagon wearing cowboy hats with pistols on their side. It was they who bought into the lie that the US patrol vessel sent to investigate Vietnam was under attack from an invisible assailant firing torpedoes.

160,000 US troops died because of those wankers. I am not making it up. For the most chilling analysis of how it happened, watch The Fog of War, the fantastic documentary where Robert Strange McNamara recounts the events that lead to the US inviting themselves into a civil war they had no business being in.

That started the rot but when the British Ambassador arrived in Washington in the early 70's with his governments request that the US government honour their pledge to swap dollars for gold (the UK wanted to exchange hundreds of millions worth) that was when the dollar started its long slide.

President Nixon immediately cut the bond tying the value of the dollar to gold & the Brits were shown the door. It is speculated that there wasn't gold to give but I have no desire to upset any of the US BM's. As history turned out, it would have been better the pledge had been honoured.

The American Dream has since soured but when the nexus is restored between the dollar & gold, then it will come back. It is part of the cycle of life...
