Just don't bomb London. There's fuck all I can do about Ireland and I don't appreciate people trying to blow me up on the way to work. We get enough grief from the Muslims without having to worry about the Irish as well. What ever next Jewish suicide squads.

As for the troubles, it's an Irish problem and it's for the Irish to sort out.

So is it illegal (or something) to belong to the IRA?. I thought that they were now a kosher group with members in the British/Irish parliament? As you can see I know fuck all about it, especially the whys and where fores. Is this a never ending problem like the Israeli/Palestinian problem, with similar insane religious underpinnings??

You have 4 IRA's Torurot. The Provisional IRA, which are the main guys, but their on a ceasefire and decommisioned all their weapons. When they put down their arms, some of them disagreed with the cease fire and set up the Continuity IRA and the Real IRA. The guys who joined the Real IRA did so cause they couldnt spell "Continuity". These two groups have pulled resources in the last 12 months and are starting to become a serious threat.

Its illegal to be a member of any of these groups. A friends brother was sent away recently for membership of one of these illegal organizations. He got pulled over by the cops and had police uniforms in his car. Cant remember how they proved he was a member of a group. I think it was something stupid like he had clothes with IRA badges on it.

(Bumpa STIKKA @ Jun. 19 2010,10:38) This one is so easy...

Give the Northern Irish people a referendum on whether or not they want to be a part of the UK.

If more than half say they do... then they are.

If more than half the adults say they do not then leave them the fuck alone.

              SORTED
Me personally I think the best thing is independence for Northern Ireland. They practically have that now anyway, except they have the full use of the "UK coffers".

This whole Saville report kinda annoys me. The UK government spent millions on that public inquiry and all it did was just confirm what everybody knew. I said this to someone the other day and it turned out to be a very heated conversation which came close to fisty cuffs.

My thinking of it is why the fuck add fuel to a fire that was nearly out. Although its great for the families of the victims to be officially declared as innocent, but now its looking likely that the British soldiers concerned are going to have charges of perjury brought against them adding more fuel to the fire.
Everybody might have known it Whore-but it still needed saying. The new word is "closure".I think it was big of Cameron to stand up in the House of Commons, and say what he did.
It would serve no purpose to prosecute any individual soldier, better to let it slide....for the sake of "closure."
Incidentally, the commanding officer that day was promoted, and is now the ambassador to China.

Tururot-its always been illegal to be a member of the IRA,and still is.You are talking about SinnFein who have members of parliament, but do not actually attend.

NB-This is potentially the most divisive thread on TLF,I hope we can keep it civil.

To be honest I can't believe this is all starting up again ..... it's covered almost my whole lifetime.....Bumpa says the people who want to be free should just move to the South and of course that would be the easy answer, but they want to remain in Ulster and STILL be free Irish; that ain't never gonna happen.

BTW I also visited the South during that trip in 2007, Seamus.....lovely place as well and the scenery was breathtaking....found our roots also, an actual village in Meath county literally with our name on it! Jake, do NOT cancel plans to visit Ireland, it's a beautiful place with friendly people and I can't wait to go back myself.

I agree it is a storm in a tea cup. The cops seem to be doing a decent enough job, on both sides of the border in catching these guys. I think its a combination of a lack of support from the majority and the advances in forensic science. The 300lb bomb the other day either failed to explode or was defused. The fact that the van it was in and the bomb itself was intact, it will lead to arrests. But this storm in a tea cup isnt going to be like it was in the past but it still seems to be gaining momentum and attacks are becoming quite regular. There was a bomb not so long ago in the centre of Newry and they only gave 17 minutes to evacuate the area. My Mum does her shopping in Newry! and its not something too many people would want to live in the backround of.

Also Jai Dee I used to fish on the river Dee, is there any connection there?

Yeah it's a worry if yer mam can't do the shopping in peace

I think the SF leadership are on to this and will be applying the pressure. Of course no one can stop the splinter groups, but seems they are quite amateur so far. I only hope we are right in thinking it is just some kind of echo from the past that will fade away.

Haven't heard much about this on the BBC or anywhere else so hope it's just isolated incidents.

This is distressing to hear, us Yanks are believing things are sorting themselves out over there finally, I hope the process isn't derailed. I was in Ireland on Bloody Sunday & my granddad got a tricolor funeral when he passed away a few years earlier for his service in the original Uprising, but that was a completely different organization from the one that evolved from it. Good people on both sides need to insure the bad times don't come back.

It is a great country to visit Jake, don't put it off (or go in the miserable, cold, damp winter!)

The IRAs are proscribed organisations. Sinn Fein is/was the political wing of the Provisional IRA- whether they admit it or not. Sinn Fein members sit in the Northern Ireland assembly and some are elected UK Members of Parliament but do not take theire seats as they won't swear allegience to the Queen.  I bet they still collect the salary though!! There are also Sinn Fein MPs in the Dail (Irish Parliament)  Martin McGuinness was the Education Minister in NI at one point- it made chemistry lessons far more interesting

I really hope as a result of the BS inquiry they don't try and prosecute 38 years after the fact althugh I'm sure the lawyers will be rubbing their hands with glee as they head off to the European Court of Human Rights practising those words 'compensation, compensation'. Bearing in mind convicted terrorists were released under the Good Fridy agreement having served minimal time for murders ( the 'Forkhill Sniper' served approx 6 weeks per murder!) it would be pretty hypocritical. Lets hope the current goings on are a blip
I couldn't give a shit how long it is until you're next holiday- I live here
