Whenever I am in Thailand for an extended period, I put on weight despite apparently eating less than at home and exercising more by diving and other more or less vigorous exercise every day and night.

This puzzled me until I spent some time looking at what I did eat and drink. Beer was a big contributer to my weight gain, so I cut it back with even worse results because I replaced it with soft drinks, all of which in Thailand are loaded with sugar, ranging from something like 8% in chilled tea in a can through to 18% in so called refreshing drinks. In a small 200ml can, thats a whacking 36gms of pure sugar in each can. However, club soda palls after the first three in an evening!

India is even worse where most drinks are flavoured sugar solutions. And there is a clear cultural preference to be fat because it indicates that you have enough money to eat and, as India gets much wealthier, more people do have enough money to eat too much.

Never mind - back home soon where the old mantra will apply:

       Move more, eat less.

Just heard an ad on the radio for a "classic 3 pound steak dinner" at a restaurant in the Meadowlands sports complex in New Jersey. The fact that such a dinner has become "classic" indicates a bit of a problem over here

I was talking to a friend of mine at a recent trade show in Las Vegas. He's in the ladies underwear business. Spoke with him about many aspects of the trade, but one thing stood out when recalling that conversation.

The size scales that the major retailers require of his company when ordering panties. Large, XLarge, XXLarge and XXXLarge and up made up more that one would think, something like 70% of the sizes were Large and up. Small and Medium were hardly represented.

Also, the lower the retail price, the larger the size scale...

This is truly sad but unfortunately true. We see more and more of this in western cultures and in particular, North America. It is a porker epidemic. It is not genetic nor anything else people may find it easy to blame it on. It is cultural and has taken the sexy out of sex.

Often times my Thai GGs ask me why I am more attracted to Asian ladies than Westerns. They ask this because all they see are these slim, fit, blonde western models in magazines and movies. They are baffled and cannot understand why we would prefer them over our own. They are clueless as to the reality the rest of us live day to day. I think it is simple. Our women, for the most part have lost the sense of being sexual, meaning how to attract and maintain a man's interest, emotionally, intellectually, and sexually. For some weird bent reason they think this puts them below us, subservient or whatever. It is so stupid on their part. I know so many women who pine and complain about not being able to find a "good" man however they do not understand what it takes. Or they know what it takes and refuse to accept it. I believe western women have a lot to learn from their Asian counterparts. AND vice versa I suppose.

For me there is no turning back. I have tried and tired and tired with westerns gals but in the end they have never been able to achieve in years what it takes a Thai lady 15 seconds to accomplish. Asians are just good at it and understand. And please don't gimme the sincerity argument. I would trade Thai charm, sexuality, dress, beauty, physical attractiveness and fitness any day for so called Western female sincerity.

I further offer the following...in the not too distant future asians will start to be more like Americans and Westeners when it comes to their eating habits.
When that happens you will start to see more and more obesity in asian societies.

It is already happening in China. The more prosperity, the more obesity.

Its already in parts of China and the Philippines, but I cant see obesity ever becoming a problem in Thailand. There is just far too much of a gap between the people who have prosperity than the people who dont. Thai cuisine is so much more affordable to the normal Thai, but even still they just do not like western food.

Good observation. I think you are right. But then again it comes down to affluence, the media, and what people aspire to. I think this is what is happening in China.

On the other hand, I have spent years in Japan and even though that culture has been heavily exposed to the West for a long time it is not commonplace to get Japanese porkers. So there is hope.

There's more and more fat Thais walking around and it's noticeable in the kids as well. Never mind banning smoking near schools, they shoud get rid of all the vendors flogging stickies and sweet drinks to the kids. Child obesity will become an issue in the urban areas within 5 years I reckon.

It also comes down to motivation.. kids what would they be rather doing? Playing games or gossiping in chat rooms on their phone/ comp or going out and having fun like we used to?
