  • God's Wrath According To Pat Robertson

700 Club founder Pat Robertson stated that the earthquake in Haiti, which may have killed 100,000 people, was God's punishment for a deal Haitian slaves made with the devil 200 years ago to get out from under French rule. Here are some other tragedies and Robertson's explanations for them:

       * Eruption of Mount St. Helens, 1980:
Divine wrath was incurred when people were too busy enjoying the natural beauty of Washington state and not spending enough time appreciating God

       * Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion, 1986:
Ten-year-old Walt Sudul, of Racine, WI, made friends with a Jewish boy at school

       * Oakland Hills Firestorm, 1991:
Emily Garrity pointed out a logical inconsistency in the concept of an omnipotent god to her Sunday school teacher

    * Magic Johnson Tests Positive for HIV, 1991: An ardent Portland Trail Blazers fan, God was horrified to see His team lose 4-2 to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1991 Western Conference Finals, and thus decided to give the winner's best player AIDS

       * Crash of American Airlines Flight 587, 2001:
Though the flight was filled with pious individuals, God was distracted by a masturbating 14-year-old in Boise, ID and was therefore unable to keep the aircraft from falling apart in midair, like all planes would without His loving intervention

       * Columbine High School Massacre, 1999:
    Tinky Winky

       * Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2004: Newlyweds Todd and Nancy Tate experimented with non-missionary sex during their honeymoon

       * Hurricane Katrina, 2005: Divine retribution for Girls Gone Wild: Mardi Gras (Volume 3)

you mean like the Old and New Testament? and the Koran?

These 3 fairy tales have killed more people in more wars than anything else.....right up to and including this very day when surely some young man or women will be killed in that rathole called Afghanistan or equally-shitty dustbin of Iraq, all in the name of Allah.   Uggghhh.

Lefty, you left out the bit about "God is going to call me home" if enough people didn't donate cash to Robertson's failed 1980's campaign for President.

Thankfully he didn't ever gain any serious consideration for President.

Unfortunately God reneged on his promise and didn't call Pat home.

Playing Devils advocate here (no pun intended) but found it interesting you should quote Marx, as the the two biggest mass murderes of the last century where communists.

Oh and should add that Robertson is a nut as is anyone who listens to him.

Yups, Mao and Stalin were atheists ....... thankfully.

Imagine if their madness was part of a religious doctrine?

I would guess that even more people would have died under their respective rules.

                Exactly!

I view religion, especially the three you mentioned as a malignant cancer on our collective humanity.
They are FUCKING POISON and the sooner people begin to realize this the better.

I really believe this, but I have  friend who is even more cynical than me, and he says it doesn't matter, if it weren't religion it would just be something else.  Maybe he's right, I don't know.

In any other walk of life you would be put under medical care if you went around spouting this nonsense .

Yet do it under the guise of religion and thats fine .

Whilst these are extreme examples of this madness its surprising what some people still believe even in this day and age .

I find it strange that hardly anyone ever pipes up in defence of Religion on this board. There must be someone up there in the Lurkersphere who can give us Atheists and  or Agnostics a run for our money

Come on...chirp up, we wont bite your head off ( we will really)

                    PS
Consider this comment i read a week ago " you wont find many athiests on a doomed aircraft thats plunging towards the ground at 1000 feet a second ". I hope i never have to put this theory to the test .

Ok Devils advocate again. Why do some atheists feel the need to go around shouting there is no god, they even sponsered signs for London buses to the effect which I find totally cringe worthy. I hate religious nuts who tell me what I should believe, but I also hate atheists telling me that there is no god. Let people make up there own minds. It's just as bad as churches trying to convert everyone to atheism. Let people believe what they want to believe. As long as their not hurting anyone what do I care.

What I was getting too with Jai Dee is what Stocubes mate said. Man will kill each other just as effectivly if you take "God" out of the equasion. It's man who is the evil fucker, not god or religion. Having said that I think  it's actions that matter more than beliefs and there has been good work done through the ages by people of all churches or synagoges or mosques in the name of god as well as some true horror stories.

The biggest problem is that some want to preach ID in schools and therefore brainwash the next generation. Probably a bigger problem in the USA but even so i noticed that the ID and Creationists are getting more about in Europe and their lobby cannot be ignored

i had to sit with a bunch of Christians in a minibus a few years back when i got stuck in Moscow and i wouldnt want to repeat that experience.  A mini debate took place and it got a little heated. Put it this way, they didnt ask for my phone number when we eventually parted Company.

Haha I could just imagine the fun you had. Incidently weren't you in Moscow when it all went pear shaped for them. Please tell me it was that night. I could just imagine the scene. The end of the great communist experiment and all Ned Flanders is worried about is the heathen Cockney in his mini van.

yeh , that was it. got stuck after the Soviet Union collapsed. had to hire a Minibus to drive around Moscow to keep warm...only to discover that the group we joined with were a bunch of Christians on the way back from Thailand.

I agree.----I like the Christopher Hitchens quote (author of "the god delusion-how religion poisons everything")-"without Religion, good people do good things, and bad people do bad things;to get good people to do bad things, you need Religion")

Mr Bush claimed God told him to invade Iraq-how come he didnt tell him there were no WMD's.?
And finally as Billy Connolly says"go along to any hospital and tell them God is talking to you-they won't even let you go home to get your pyjamas"
