(Tomcat @ Jan. 22 2010,23:39) I find it strange that hardly anyone ever pipes up in defence of Religion on this board. There must be someone up there in the Lurkersphere who can give us Atheists and  or Agnostics a run for our money
You're kidding, right? Look at the political threads on this board and tell me this is a place that is tolerant of other views.

Religion is ok?-its the fundamentalist religious nuts that are the biggest threat to peace in the world now.Fundamentalist christians vote in  borderline retard George Dubya, who embarks on a "crusade" in the middle east.Fundamentalist jews steal Palestinian land and evict them from their homes because they say God gave them the land 2000 years ago.Fundamentalis moslems want to terrorise the infidel because they want to make the world Muslim.(By far the greatest crock of shit is Islam,a barbaric medieval religion, who circumcise young girls without  anaesthetic, stone adulterers to death, strap suicide belts onto mentally retarded children and detonated them in crowded market places-all in the name of Allah!)Religion poisons everything-and it needs to be said.

Thanks, Travis, "you talking to me?"
Anyway, I liked the Hitchen's quote; I'm stealing it.
"Bankin' off of the northeast wind
            Salin' on a summer breeze
And skippin' over the ocean, like a stone."

Well said Travis, I am sure there are many here who would agree with you.

And I am glad you differentiated the fundamentalists as the problem & not made the sweeping allegation that all followers of religion (regardless which one) are bad.

I found my opinion of Muslims was greatly affected by time I spent in the Middle East mixing with well educated moderate Muslims. With their wit, good manners & most surprisingly, their universal wisdom that showed itself in their deep understanding of the world, they were charming to a fault. Any time of the day they would engage me in a philisophical discussion about the nature of man or how the West's biased view of the ME was leading to unfortunate outcomes.

OK, I admit my sample group was small, I was in Bahrain (virtually the Las Vegas of the Middle East) & these guys felt the same as I do about the Wahibs & other hardline fundamentalist Muslims who disguise their hatred behind their religious piety.

The real enemy of fundamentalism isn't bigger weapons, it is education. George W Bush missed a glorious opportunity when he refused the advice to build schools in Afghanistan that could be used to teach tolerance & give an alternative to the Madrassas that are the breeding ground for tomorrow's terrorists.

What he did do though was authorise 700 Christian missionaries to go to Afghanistan. I am sure they were a great help. And we wonder why they continue to hate us.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Hitchens is quoted often in Richard Dawkins books, I think they are buddies

that exact quote can be found in 'The God Delusion'

Unfortunately, threads or indeed even every day conversations about 3 things will always lead to disagreements and fights; religion, politics and abortion. Maybe even add in the death penalty to that list, they are all polarizing things that not everyone can ever agree on.

I have 2 pals who read here, Blue Ballz and Lefty. Lefty is a left-winger [shocking, eh?] and BB is a rightie and neither side will ever yield; being more of a moderate I tend to just not discuss politics when I chat with these guys since I know I can get nowhere with them and would rather not argue; better to chat about sports or every day things.

Religion is the same; when my sister or some other person who believes in these nonsensical fairy tales tries to lure me into them, I just change the subject. I don't believe in any of it and can't be swayed; any doctrine which believes that a child lived in a whales belly or Adam and Eve created original sin or some garbage about a Virgin birth, etc, etc....ad nauseum, just makes me want to laugh; or hurl.

We each believe in our own things.....after 18 hellish years being raised as an Irish Catholic my parents told me I could choose my own religion to follow from then on; I choose NONE and will always go with science over some old books which are frankly full of shit.

RELIGION IS NOTHING MORE THAN A WAY FOR THE RICH AND POWERFUL TO CONTROL THE LOWER CLASSES. ANYONE WHO CANNOT SEE THAT IS A COMPLETE FOOL AND NOT WORTH WASTING A MOMENT'S CONSIDERATION ON.

THAT BIBLE PASSAGE ABOUT GOD CREATING MAN IN HIS OWN IMAGE IS A LOT OF HORSE DUNG. MAN CREATED GOD IN HIS OWN IMAGE.

MY OLD FRIEND, THE MERCURIAL ENIGMATIC MR LONELY SUMMED IT UP QUITE SIMPLY WHEN HE SAID TO ME: "I CANNOT PROVE TO YOU THERE IS NO GOD AND YOU CANNOT PROVE TO ME THERE IS ONE."

THAT SAYS ALL ANYONE NEEDS TO CONSIDER ON THE TOPIC.

                      Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Law and how to follow them.

                      1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord -- Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

                      2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

                      3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness -- Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

                      4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

                      5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. The passage clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

                      6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there "degrees" of abomination?

                      7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

                      8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

                      9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

                      10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? -- Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

                      Your adoring fan,

James M. Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus Dept. of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education University of Virginia

Religion has been around for a long time so it must have some evolutionary advantage that eventually led to it being used as a means of control.

The theories are endless but lets face it the most probable one is that once Homo Sapien became aware of death , Religion was almost a certainty. Lets face it your pet Dog doesnt worry about dying.

Inspired by the angel of the Lord (and Vodka) here are your answers

                          1) Run around your garden declaiming in a loud voice that the Fire Department are useless and should have been there hours ago and if that fails smite away - claim your neighbours are an Al Queda cell and you should get off no problem

2)Sell her on Ebay - the Lord understands market forces

                          3) Only touch Ladyboys then you will have no problems

                          4) This is clearly racial prejudice - in the UK where this vision manifests itself we have a similar problem with the Welsh

                          5) Only if you don't get paid for it - otherwise its work and someone has to kill you and so on

                          6) Nobody ever got mercury poisoning from homosexuality - you work it out

                          7) A long as you don't have to read directions to find the altar there should be room for compromise

                          8) Boiling in Brylcreem usually does the trick

                          9) Tricky one this - if you mean NFL football then thats OK but Association Football or Soccer restricts this to the goalkeeper and Thierry Henri

                          10) Yes burn them all - sell the farmland to a developer and devote the money to good works (see staff rota at the Guess Bar for details)

I trust this eases your soul my brother
