'Buzzing' and 'nudging' on IM...

Can some one please tell why people feel the need to buzz/nudge you on instant messenger such as yahoo or msn (aka windows live messenger) ?

I can't for the life of understand why people do it! I mean if I was not busy I would answer you and if you want to say hello then say hello.

I just think it is arrogant and rude.

What are your thoughts?

I don't use Facebook or Myspace etc but I do use IM because I need to communicate with work colleagues quickly and often this is the only way to do it conveniently when they are on the other side of the world.

I also use Skype for this.

I actually hate using it, and it's very rare I bother logging in these days.

I used to find it very difficult to have a 'conversation' with anyone, and found it frustrating when you had to wait an eternity for a reply.
