Six or seven years ago I was in Trang, in Southern Thailand. Not too many farang there. Had lots of time to kill so decided to take a elephant ride, so OK enough farang around to have elephant rides.
We were travelling by van to get to the changs and I'm chatting with the Thai lady working for the travel agency and she starts talking about Michael Jackson and that he was holding his baby over a balcony which was controversial at the time.
I'm thinking how the hell does she know about this? It's not about talent.
If after his big hits of the 80's he just lived a normal life and stayed out of the tabloids his fame factor would be much much lower.
But the skin whitening, the Neverland ranch, the contoversies kept him in the limelight even as his career was stalled.
I see lots of parallels to Elvis. A short period of time with big hits and movies (MTV videos for Michael) followed by lots of wierdness and tabloid coverage. For how many other people do you know the names of their residences?

Not trying to nitpick but I think if you change musician to entertainer I would agree. I'm nine years older than Michael but I'd have to say Thriller was a great piece of work, though I was more into Springsteen's Born in the USA at the time.
