Dear all,
I am currently preparing my first solo-exhibition, as an artist in Singapore. This series of artworks "Marla." will be first exhibited in ladyboy bars in Thailand, as part of my stance towards the anti-art, anti-societal norm. Part of the collection was first exhibited on 6th November 2009 as part of the setdesign for "The Man Who Questions Death" by Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian, a play presented by Little Red Shop, a theatre company in Singapore. There is also a 2009 "Marla" calendar, which will host selected works from the series.
Life is too short to conform to silly traditional norms. I'm not a pistol, going around challenging gender presentation and identity. The only way I could live a fulfilling life is to be true to myself and be as fabulous as I can possibly be. I was rejected a university scholarship due to my sexual orientation. I was told to change the way I look, or get a medical opinion, after presenting my recent photograph at the immigration office. Even in the arts scene, assumedly tolerant of sexual and gender deviants, I've been asked if I could dress 'normally' for work. I was told to leave the orchestra I played with for three years because I dress 'differently' now.
Sure I ran into many obstacles along the way, but I'm glad I did not have to compromise my beliefs and my integrity to submit and conform to 'norms' people came up with to deal with their insecurities. I was not brought into this world to be a wall-flower. This 'home' I live in, a seemingly modern city, has become a prison; the shackles on my hands and feet, the narrow-mindedness of people who choose to judge, than to love. When Jaymee first asked me to join the forum in August 2008, I never knew how sweet appreciation tastes like. I would like to dedicate "Marla." to all you guys as well as my family and friends who love me dearly for who I am. Seriously, chill out and enjoy yourselves!
