Part of me agrees with you about who or what really runs this country, and the world. Also, "politics" much of the time, to me looks like fucking wrassling; you know, a show with a foregone conclusion put on to entertain and distract the rubes.
However, I think it does make a difference to our lives who gets elected president. I'm thinking of appointments to the Supreme Court, the effects to the economy that an administration's policies can cause, etc. While you may be wealthy enough to be able to insulate yourself from the effects of laws and government policies, I'm sure a lot of the rest of us are not so lucky.
So when it comes time to vote I'll temporarily put aside my belief that it is all a meaningless show, and go and vote for what I think best serves my interests. After that, I'll go back to thinking that it doesn't make any difference.

Because Kerry was probably the worst candidate they could fine...no one really liked him. They just hated Bush...but not enough obviously (well not obviously, the election in Ohio was crooked).
I think someone was trying to prove the 'sock puppet theory' (1) and it failed in real world tests.

Obama on the other hand IS a good candidate...he has a real gift for Oratory, and when McCain speaks it is just pathetic and sounds 'old'. Obama's being black will not hurt him except in states where a democrat wouldn't win anyhow.

      (1) The Sock Puppet theory postulates that Bush is such a horrible president, that it was irrelevant who ran against him and even a sock puppet could win....in hindsight, John Kerry was no sock puppet.

"This is the jug-eared clown us Yanks voted for, and we deserve what we get."
Not really, the evil monkey-boy and his vile henchmen stole the election; without a doubt in 2000, and quite possibly in 2004.
We deserve what we get for not having the cojones to throw his ass in jail.

I wonder how different the country and the world and not to mention my portfolio would look had Al Snore had the job these past 8 years as he should have?

                Kerry =  empty suit

same as Romney,  and  both from Massachusetts, one of the most politically corrupt states in the country

Romney by way of Michigan of course ..... that pretty boy may be the Veep choice for the old guy BTW

What a mess the incoming President stands to inherit, Americans really are reaping what they sowed ...

In the meantime, the rest of the world looks on in horror at the unfolding disaster coming out of Wall Street, with most leading banks technically bankrupt right now.

With urgent action needed, the incumbent, George W just carries on utterly unable to fathom what to do next, all the tax breaks he doled out to the big end of town have done nothing to save the place from the trainwreck that is ensuing.

There are so many good & decent people in the States, none of them deserve what has happened to them over the past 8 years.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

I guess none of you are old enough to remember the economic disaster that followed Vietnam...a mess created by Democrats (Kennedy/Johnson) which was cleaned up by a Republican (Nixon). Of course, Nixon had other issues (Watergate), that did him in and Ford filled in nicely only to lose to one of the least economically effective Presidents in my memory, Carter. How many times I sat watching this guy in a sweater tell us how bad things were. Then we were rescued by the guy on the white horse, Reagan. Years later, even the Democrats had to admit that Reagans economic policies pulled us out of a huge mess and created the foundation for the economic success of the 90's which Clinton weakly tried to take credit for...unsuccessfully.

JaiDee...Bush is out of office in 6 months...stop whining, ok, and get over it. Mirimark has a point...the President in office has a minimal effect on what happens in the economy. Congress, however, has a much larger impact on what happens, although effects are usually not felt until years later. Capitalism runs in cycles, with natural ups and downs....it is controlling the extent of these ups and downs that is the responsibility of the governments of the countries in which we live.

I told you on another thread that it will be the VP choices that decide this election. I will remind all of you about that after the fact in mid-November. Why? The electorate is polarized...all of you have given evidence of that. Whoever these candidates choose as VP will swing enough votes to decide the election.

I have been a voting Republican for 37 years now...yes, I voted for Bush and have been disappointed with his inability to make sound economic decisions. I am not very happy with either of these candidates. My preference for the Republicans would have been Giuliani with Paul as VP...a much fresher approach than Romney (Mormon) or McCain (Stuck in the Past). As for the Democrats...I guess Obama is their choice, however I think the Democrats are stuck in that mode...always wanting the "fresh face" candidate.

I predict that Obama will win...I also think Clinton would have won as well...it's the Democrats turn in the Oval Office anyway.

Obviously you don't know Giuliani, he is probably the only candidate who would be more incompetent (and certainly more corrupt than Bush&co).

Nobody has mentioned the huge number of under 25 year old voters that turned out in the Democratic primaries.
It may actually be a new generation of voters that puts Obama into the job.
McCain, at 72, is just way to old and as correctly pointed out is without a great deal of knowledge on many subjects. Not that the present buffoon has any knowledge about anything.
Apart from the welded on Republicans I can't see how they can be hopeful of winning this time around.
As for Mitt Romney, are any of the U.S. members serious in their praise for him.Although I guess going from one religious weirdo to another is nothing new to the U.S.
The big winner however will always be the industrial/military complex that sucks hundreds of billlions of dollars away from health, education, infrastructure, etc to "protect America".They have grown stronger every year since "The British were coming" back in 1812.

Before 9/11 he was getting run out of NY.

He did do a good job on 9/11 and the days afterward. He was also a good prosecuter. And he would do well in a role such as Brownie's.

But for prez, no way Jose.

                            Does the president matter?

If Gore had won in 2000 there's be more American soldiers and Iraqis alive today.

I guess it's whining to be sick and tired of a bufoon whose only claim to fame is he has successfully made the United States not only more hated by the rest of the world but the punchline of every third world comedian. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of wasted lives both US and Iraqi. If thats whining......sign me up

Kind of a warped way of thinking about the economy also when you just happen to forget 88-92 when Bush 1 almost single handedly destroyed the economice structure with his "trickle down" theories and also forgetting the 15-20% unemployment rates under Nixon/Ford.........

Selective reasoning typical GOP reich wing tactic

I am not getting over it

I have lived through the worst 8 years in presidential history with Cheney in there [no one thinks jug ears was really the prez, do they?] and now can't wait for the repubs to be gone; and this coming from a long-time Reagen Republican!!

I loved what he did for our country..... I never liked Clinton at all..... I was usually a right-winger all the way until about 2002; now on the idealogical scale where I used to be about a 7 on a 1-10 scale I am now a 4. Not left-wing lunatic but certainly have given up on the Repubs, they SUCK!!!!

Yes, companies control the country....and one of those being Halliburton..... being handed a no-bid contract back in 2001 to handle the war; very surprising considering President Cheney was on their board before he became the Prez! No one finds anything wrong with that? Since then Halliburton and their shareholders have gotten rich, thanks Dick.

An oilman steals the election and the price of oil doubles while he is in office..... what a fucking joke there also, same as when he ran his own oil company which his daddy gave him into the ground back in the 80's [how does anyone do that?]

Keep saying it; 5 more months and Jug Ears and his boss Mr Cheney are gone, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy!!!!

Please, please Lord.....let it be Obama, we need someone like him more than ever right now
