    (janabiyah @ Jul. 21 2008,05:32) Hi Pacman,

I saw No country for old men. I enjoyed bits of it, but did not understand the waffle at the end.

I thought the plot was going strong until about three quarters of the way through when the director decided to become a bit arty about presenting the pivotal scenes. As a result, the viewer was left trying to guess what had happened.

Also the way the plot ended I did not find entertaining.

So for me, it was a great movie wasted.

I dont think it deserved any accolades it received.
No country for old men was simply brilliant!

It does deserve the accolades it got..

I have not been in a movie for a long time that builds suspense like this one... some of the story telling was just superb, acting brilliant, camera work stunning.

As for the ending.. well yes its odd... but it all part of deeper point to the entire movie rather than just the "action".

    9/10 for me!

He's dead isn't he? Though I think I saw his sled advertised on eBay recently!

(pacman @ Jul. 21 2008,07:27) Another Sam Spade flick in the same genre & worth watching is The Big Sleep.
The wise-cracking dialogue between Bogart & a 19 y.o. Lauren Bacall has rarely been surpassed.
actually, it's Philip Marlowe. A great move though - and I've also seen other version with Robert Mitchum. I'm a big fan of Raymond Chandler's books too (in particular the Marlowe ones) - especially interesting because they are written in the vernacular of the day (1930s California)

Good call on Sydney Greenstreet . Would you believe the Maltese Falcon was his screen debut? He also played the rival cafe owner in Casablanca.

I went on a Bogart spree last year and bought a whole lot of his DVDs - great stuff. Himself and Claude Rains are brilliant in Casablanca though - possibly my fave movie ever (I've watched it twice since I came to Texas) ... even better than Citizen Kane

Marlowe, of course, I watched it enough, I should know that!
Sydney Greenstreet, if my memory doesn't fail me this time, was a stage actor, & at 300lbs, he brought real weight to his role ...

On the other side of the Atlantic, two comparable character actors are Charles Laughton & Margaret Rutherford.

                      Both wonderful, both worth watching.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

cracking film. I am a big fan of Bond. When daniel craig got the role i was very shocked. I said to anyone who would listen big mistake. Well he shut me up! He has the coldness of Bond in the books. Still have a soft spot for roger moore and his eyebrows though.
