I meant to add a name the other day but forgot...The pain of age...If he is already here I apologize...I'm too lazy to go back and read through this thread...

I can't believe nobody mentioned Duane Allman! At least the Rolling Stone list gave credit where it's due.
I notice Jeff Beck never got a mention either.
You guys have come up with some fantastic guitarists and the depth and breadth of knowledge shown here amazes me; I just can't believe these 2 were missed out.
Both Acoustic and Electric I always love the sounds George Harrison used to generate, he was my favourite Beatle who from time to time eclipsed Lennon & Mac
(Naang Faa @ Mar. 22 2008,02:06) What he said....Smiths
found this on a Lyrics website; a bit off -topic, but if The Smiths and Morissey didn't have the best song lyrics ever, who did? Heard today when I was playing "Meat is Murder" for the 1000th time;
''And when I'm lying in my bed
I think about life
And I think about death
And neither one particularly appeals to me''
talk about a cynic!!
Classic stuff from the always -tortured soul of a great singer

Like Buttafly says you dont have to just pick single notes out to be imaginative.
One of my favourites is ,,The Rocker,, by Thin Lizzy, and guitard by Eric Bell who was an Irish Guy ( as were all the Original trio). The opening intro is a sizzling 30 seconds of chord fireworks...most of us guitar freaks could never figure out how to play it...
just like the intro to Hocus Pocus.... no one could figure out how it was done ( properly)
(Tomcat @ Mar. 23 2008,22:07) One guy i did miss off my list was Toni Iommi of Sabbath... fuck me how did i forget him. His riffs were the birth of heavy metal , a cool man or what..I like his SG Guitar with the pearl Crusifix inlays all down the fretboard...the original anti christ.
Funny story TC.....
when I was a wee lad I was already a metal-head ..... my friends and myself were ahead of our time and playing Sabb and New York Dolls records when other kids were listening to Olivia Newton John and the Bee Gee's, and we were playing Ramones and Pistols singles when our high school peers were playing Styx and Kansas ballads while trying to score with the cheerleaders; uggghhhh.
In 6th grade my sister asked me what I wanted for a B-day present; I had "Volume 4", with Tony inside the opening LP jacket playing that red SG guitar left-handed and just looking so fucking cool. I said "I wanna go see Sabbath at the Orpheum" in Boston, on the 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' tour which was hitting town .... she says "errrm, can you pick another band, please?"
LOL...she was afraid of the seedy element who would certainly show up!!
Fast-forward 3 or 4 years..... Sab's last tour in support of 'Never Say Die'..... my stoner friends and I drive down to Cape Cod to see them; first song was Symptoms of the Universe and they never let up for 2 hours, the fucking crowd was insane; the local paper the next day compared the concert to "the sound of an airplane taking off for 2 hours" ...... yeaahh, and what's so wrong with that??
On the stage, Iommi had center stage; the spotlight was on HIM and not Ozzie, who was off to the left singing; how many bands have the focal point of the group on the guitar player?? These guys and AC/DC, not too many others.... and he deserved it, Iommi was the master of the power chords and his riffs were awesome.
The back-up band that night was a little-known southern California foursome with a manic guitar player as well; not as good as Sabbath by any means but still keeping the crowd happy for a while, they would go on to international fame as well as a future superstar group named Van Halen.

fuckin ell boys, not one single bm has mentioned the mighty Steve Jones of the pistols, not a world class guitarist but had a great enthusiasm for life ( err except when he was a heroin addict for a few years) and he inspired me beyond belief with his immortal 1978 quote on bbc tv " all i wanna do is ave a few bevvies with me mates and shag some tarts" come on .... what else is there to live for apart from this and golf.
Hear all, see all, say nowt, well not much anyrode.

Ive still got their first Album, the one with the Witch in the woods on the cover with the old stone building in the backdrop....creeeepy or what...they used a lot of Aleister Crowley stuff in the lyrics. This album set the agenda for the next thirty years in heavy metal ( not Rock ) and is still a classic....

One other guy forget about was Jeff the Skunk Baxter out of Steely Dan. How did i miss him out..what a genius
Pretzel Logic.. wow! what an album

Going slightly about twenty odd years ago (possibly more - as I am going through a "that was never that long ago" phase) I worked for a company that among other things installed specialist insulation.
I was sent with a couple of other guys to Aleister Crowley's old house at Loch Ness then owned by Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple, who wanted to upgrade his studio insulation.
The house had some wild gothic style decor and the sound engineer we had to see was a bit strange, but a brief meeting with the man himself revealed a really decent guy - I suppose when you are that good you don't have to put on airs.
Needless to say one of the guys reckoned he saw a swirl of water in the Loch that HAD to be the monster - although I put it down to the atmosphere of the place.
