(Naang Faa @ Feb. 29 2008,16:45) Communal respect for fellow board members and the intellectual level is lost more by the "effing and blinding" many of the posts contain as against the misplaced apostrophe...
mmm. Apologies for the effing and blinding, Naang Faa, and to the original poster seanbeag7, but not for the complaint about the misplaced apostrophe. The apostrophe is one of the English language's finest tools: it's an aid to clarification and simplification that we need to protect.

Anyway, I'm going to look at some porn.

        erm.
It's "you're" not "your": one's a contraction, the other is a personal pronoun.

Unfortunately there is no smilie for 'pedantic old fart'.

(stogie bear @ Feb. 28 2008,08:18) I'm not even really bothered by the odd mistakes that creep in to most of our daily online posts. My real problem is that outside of the whole language issue people are just dumber than they ever were and it's not a priority to even try to fix it.
With computers becoming more common, spell checking and text messaging people are forgetting how to spell as they don't have to use their brains any longer.

You don't need a similie for that because I don't consider you are one.
You sir are nothing less than one of the last bulwarks against the ever
declining literary standards we witness every day amongst writers of the English language.

I am constantly surprised by the misuse of the words :

                we're, where & were

                they're, there & their

                you're & your

                here & hear

                . . . and others.

It is good to see the correct use of these words but it is less common than ever.
The sentence can still be understood but it grates to think that the writer will continue to offend every time he uses one of these examples.

I am not a smart arse, I was fortunate to have a good teacher who made us learn this stuff.
Once all standards are abandoned then god help the education system.

It may sound pedantic, but as I always say :

                . . . better to be a pedant than a pederast.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

And that is exactly the point I was trying to make with my earlier post...We all make mistakes...all the time...And I'm as guilty as anyone...

Let's all split a few infinitives just for the fuck of it...and dangle a few participles for good measure...

I love this forum. You join it to look at naughty pictures, and you get involved in discussions about grammar, spelling, politics, literature, porn, sport and god alone knows what else. And you 'meet' people who you really, really like.

                        Love it, absolutely love it.

I've not seen that, though I've a collection of similar books, including "Let's talk Strine" by Professor Afferbeck Lauder (It's the way you say it), Fraffly - Well Spoken, and Larn Yersell Geordie, among others.
