  • Spelling 'loser' with two 'o's!

    What a 'looser!'

I cringe whenever I see people who don't have a grasp of basic English words like this.

It's one thing to make a typographical error. It's even OK to be completely crap at spelling and not care!

But to be supposedly reasonably educated and STILL get words like this wrong is just insane...

(And it's OK to start a sentence with 'but'... erm, and 'and!')

...all this rubbish we see in our high streets & in the pound shop is waisting and polluting!
Grrrr! Here's another one that gets my goat! WAISTING?

As much as I also hate to see the English language being murdered it's something we cannot change.

It's part of the natural evolution of language, just imagine if language didn't 'progress' where we would be.

Ye woud be fpeaking and writing the fame as William Shakespeare ufed to doeth.

Spelling the word 'loser' with two 'o's is not an indication of the change and modernization of our native tongue. I'm all for updating the language and saying that something is 'bad' when we really mean that' it's good!

I'm not even really bothered by the odd mistakes that creep in to most of our daily online posts. My real problem is that outside of the whole language issue people are just dumber than they ever were and it's not a priority to even try to fix it.

'O' levels to hard? Well, lower the pass levels. Really having trouble even after that? Well, let's just call an end to the whole pass/fail system altogether!

If we are talking about Johnny Foreigner screwing our mother tongue then yes but I was thinking of the illiterate teenage chavs.

                Whatever changes are made to the education system the language will still evolve, and lets face it English is a bit slack with the rules at times;

                Tough
                Cough
                Rough
                Dough

                It goes on and on...

The oooo is emphazied for effect when pronouncing loser. If the word loose (as in loose fitting clothing) did not exist, then lose would probably be spelled loose.

Maybe it should be spelled "looze". In any case, no excuse for bad english. It's the slang that I don't understand.

You know, if you like you can blame the French for English spelling being as fucked up as it is. If I remember correctly, about 30% of English vocabulary comes from the French forms of Latin words.
Just my to, too, two cents,
                      Cheers,

As an non-English speaker who had to find his way to survive and communicate abroad, I'm obviously a grammar and spelling mistakes churner
I've the impression that LOOSER it's wrongly written and pronounced also because people hear it being said by Americans, mostly in movies, with an 'oooo' effect that sounds like Loooooser instead of a dry and short Loser, as it should be.
Also, the fact that it's pronounced with a U like in Loo, Waterloo, and so on can lead to this common mistake, I guess.
Also, Waist and Waste are quite similar in pronounciation, and easy to mix up. As well, many other words are in the English language.
Spelling and grammar mistakes are common for non-mother tongue speakers. You have just to be patient and waiting for some more years when English would have wiped out all other languages worldwide and will be the ONLY commonly spoken language on mother Earth
Do only what you think it's good for you, and not what others think should be good for you!
