The ageing rock star Gary Glitter was in Vietnamese custody last night, being investigated on child sex abuse charges.
Gary Glitter: in custody
Paul Gadd - the singer's real name - was held at the airport in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, as he tried to board a flight for Bangkok.
A manhunt had been launched for the once bouffant-haired glam rocker, now 61, after he was reported to be living in a seafront villa in the resort of Vung Tau, with a 15-year-old alleged to be his girlfriend.
The age of consent in Vietnam is 16. Sex with a minor is punishable by up to 12 years in prison. Raping a minor can be punished by death.
Gadd is being investigated for having sex with a 12-year-old, according to Vietnamese state media.
The wheels of Vietnamese justice grind slowly, and suspects can be held in custody during the entire police investigation but not be charged formally until the file is sent to the prosecutors.
Gadd was sentenced to four months' imprisonment in Britain in 1999 for possession of around 4,000 images of child pornography.
