  • Calling all STAR TREK fans

I know there are some Trek fans here. I'm looking for some help from those who feel they know the movies well, specifically the old cast.

I'm working on a project that is a Jungian analysis of the four main characters as the four Jungian personality archetypes.

    1) Kirk - The SP (sensing perceiver). The Artisan.
The swashbuckling, quick witted decision maker. The warrior, protector, action oriented. Like Teddy Roosevelt. The Lion, with courage and the ability to act.

    2) Scotty - The SJ (sensing judger). The Guardian.
The infrastructure, the foundational provider. Makes sure everything works, and will toil tirelessly to provide for the others. The ant to others grasshopper. Creates a safe and functional place where others can do their work. Like George Washington. Like Dorothy, values of home and family.

    3) Bones - The NF (intuitive feeler). The Idealist.
A healer and uniter. Like Abraham Lincoln, reconciling the nation that was torn apart. Healing through transformative suffering. Empathetic and centered on people and equality, egalitarianism. The Tinman, with a heart of feeling.

    4) Spock - The NT (intuitive thinker). The Rational.
Genius mastermind. Theoretician and analyst. Prophet and visionary. Polymath, like Thomas Jefferson. The Scarecrow, a mind for solving problems.

What I'm looking for is specific scenes from the movies that you think really show examples of these characters embodying these character types.

Umm, would you like a Thetan or a Clear to go with that?

I can only say that Nong Poy has her phaser set on stun. Because she sure stuns me!

    Sorry, couldn't help it.

Umm, for Spock, try the 3rd movie or the 4th movie, he had some issues with being hyperrational. Of course, he was half-human, and that produced conflicts, rather than pure evidence of someone who was pure logic. That whole warp around the sun thing involved a bit of guesswork, for instance.

The first movie was important, too. They had to decipher V'ger. Still gives me the creeps.

Update: The new list is coming together: Nong Poy, Anita, Nok, Gif, Liisa Winkler, Kay, Nina Poon.  Is it possible to find 5 more?  Until then, GGs:  Jessica Alba, Yuko Ogura, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Q, and Gong Li.

Grunyen, glad to see you're posting on something we can agree on!

Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan has several scenes that show Kirk's decision making and leadership, as well as Scotty's ability to keep everything fixed and running.

It has been a few years since I have viewed all the films, so my recollection may not be 100% accurate.

During the final battle scene between Enterprise and the Khan's vessel, Kirk takes Enterprise into a nebula - this is a key decision that leads to their victory because Kirk knows Khan will follow, and the advantage then goes to Kirk even though Enterprise is badly damaged. There are several more of these throughout the the movie.

The battle scene is also a good example of Scotty's ability to repair and fix things in next to impossible conditions.

Near the beginning of the movie, Spock is commanding the Enterprise as they are on the training mission with the cadets. He displays his logic when he turns command over to Kirk when the request comes in for assistance for the station where the Genesis device is kept. While this is not the best example, it is one that stands out. Also of course near the end of the movie, where he sacrifices himself to engage the warp engines to save Enterprise, it is totally logically as well, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".

McCoy shows empathy for all those injured during the battle with Khan, and I think even more shows as he is with Spock when he makes his sacrifice to save the crew and ship.

It is generally agreed by fans that ST II is more true to the television series than the other movies. ST IV, The Voyage home was directed by Leonard Nimoy and was also more in line - so if you want to look for examples these two ST films would be your best bet.

I think some of the other fans on the forum will be able to supply more examples for you.

      Hope this helps!

      Live long and prosper!

Hey I never knew Star Trek was so deep

I always thought that it was merely that Kirk et al were the cowboys and that the Klingon's/Romulans were the Indians.

        RR.
Pedants rule, OK. Or more precisely, exhibit certain of the conventional trappings of leadership.

When Star Trek was created, some network executives characterized it that way "wagontrain to the stars".

Interviews with Gene Roddenberry shows he loosely based Kirk's character on Horatio Hornblower, a fictional Royal Navy Officer during the Napoleonic wars. This was a series of novels and short stories written by C.S. Forester.

The writers took themes from real life events to create a lot of the stories so it is not surprising we see work on analysis of Star Trek.

          Scotty, beam me up!

I'm at work so don't have access to my Trekkie archive - some employers have no sense of what is right but -

there's an episode where the miners on a distant world are being killed by a "monster" which turns out to be a silicon based life form protecting its nest. After a batttle Bones repairs the creature using silicon cement and as a result brings the two races together to the benefit of both.

then again Plato's Children, possibly the best episode ever which shows Kirk exercising true leadership skills as opposed to gung ho simplicity

finally Amok Time the one where Spock goes through his seven yearly hormone rush and we see the man beneath the mental discipline thus demonstarting the reverse side of the traits that make Spock the person he is.

Good luck with the thesis and lets hope it leads to academic recognition and a star trek theme night at the Guess Bar

            Cheers

              Thanks everyone, especially Rxpharm.

Some good suggestions there. I knew Ep. II and IV would be goldmines.

Strangely enough, 5, which is univerally loathed, has two things I do actually like about it (though it's terrible overall). The camera work is awesome. I don't know much about who did the cinematography for the Trek films, but 5 just has some of the most beautiful, clear, sharp, rich images.

Also, the big showdown seen where Spock's brother is showing each them their pain is awesome. How they each react, especially Kirk's speech is so true to character and so amazing. I thought about just using that scene, but it doesn't really include Scotty.

(I had already considered Scott from Ep. II where he is a real fixer, and also the value of his wife's nephew).

I remember that there was something slightly odd about Star Trek IX (or thereabouts): I think the editors misspelled "Resurrection" as "Insurrection". What were they thinking?

I'm not in the position to buy, but just out of curiousity, I'd be interested in seeing what you are auctioning.

Did you see the special on TV where they were clearing out the Paramount props warehouse and auctioning off almost everything from the Star Trek franchise.

A lot of it was awesome. I have to admit that 7' long model of the 1701-A practically made me stand up and salute. You know if you were rich it would be awesome to have that hanging from one of the tall ceilings in your house with working lights.

You're welcome grunyen, nice to be able to be cooperating! Yes, it would be something to have the NCC1701A model in the house, I am sure it must have gone for a good sum. Would be interesting to know who won it!

Would be good to know how the project goes!

I live inside a 1701A, I hope to move into a 1701D next year. It has better astronaut diapers.

Did anyone see the news video recently about the British guy who was selling his Star Trek apartment. He had gotten divorced and was determined to make a batchelor pad that he loved.

The whole thing looked exactly like the Enterprise D (Next Generation). It was very impressive.
