I think most western democracies strike a good balance between individual freedom and a stable societiy.

But we are very willing to look the other way as our governments and businesses exploit much of the undeveloped world.

We actually believe it's our hard work that's got us where we are.  Truth is we are damn lucky to be born in America or Europe rather than in Africa or Turdistan.

At home we can say and do pretty much whatever we want.  And we outsource our sex.  Life is good (for us).

(stogie bear @ Mar. 27 2007,19:13) I don't know how, when or why the US christened themselves "The land of the free!" It's the biggest misrepresentation of fact since Jesus said 'My mum's a virgin, you know!'

There's lots to like about the US but freedom or expression is NOT one of them!

You can tell how desperate they are to keep up this freedom dream by the amount of times they use the word 'free' or 'freedom' in their everyday lives especially the media...

"You are now free to move about the country!"

An airline uses this to sell tickets! That's how bad it's gotten!
SB hit it on the nail. Having been a member of the military protecting the "land of the free" I was stunned by the lack of freedom available to the everyday working citizen once I retired.

The average citizen really owns nothing in the US. If you own your house and car for instance you still pay yearly taxes, registration fees, or some other fee to the government.

Hell, I work primarilly as an armed courier. I however, am a Certified Firearms Instructor. Just trying to find a piece of land "zoned" for range use in my home country in Tennessee is like This country was made "free" by its armed citizenry.

Big Brother definitely watches you. Of course in my primary line of work I am sort of already use to that (still somewhat paranoid though).

Hell, it has gotten to the point that if I ever again travel outside the USA I will probably just carry a small hand carry with toilet items in it and will purchase/dispose of everyday items (clothing, etc.) in the country visited just to eliminate the "hassels" of traveling to/from the "land of the free."
