(grunyen @ May 17 2007,02:46) Just out of curiousity, what specifically do you hate Jerry Falwell so much for?

Before you respond, think carefully, and don't give some vague generic crap, or ad hominem attack, or something you heard from someone elses talking points, or something you go look up in another browser window before you reply.

I want to know what each of you above me really know about him, specifically, that he has done. Without all the empty words, name calling, or vague put-downs.

Just the facts. Specifically, what do you know about, that he has done, that has earned him so much hate from you personally.
I sense that after you get the answers to your question you are ready to defend  Falwell?

"Jerry Falwell, by all accounts of people who knew him was a warm and caring individual who exemplified the christian lifestyle. I am not aware of anyone who considered him a hypocrite."

There it is, ok.. now i need to lay down after laughing so hard my ribs hurt....."warm and caring individual who exemplified the christian lifestyle" priceless.

Okay, here ya go, the wikikpedia on Falwell.
May he be eternally ass-raped by Satan in hell for all eternity, with no lube!

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Falwell

Read it and you'll know why we hate the bastard. Maybe that's lazy, but they just wrapped it all up all nice and pretty so I didn't have to.

                >>"It was bad enough Jerry Falwell, while chatting with Pat Robertson, made the following statement a few days after Sept. 11 on the "700 Club" television program.

Jerry Falwell: "What we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact, God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."

Pat Robertson: "Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population."

Jerry Falwell: "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'"

Now I know Jerry Falwell repeatedly explained to everyone that his comments were taken out of context (from what or how I remain unsure) but then again, could just as easily be misconstrued as a gourmet cooking Web site.">>

(grunyen @ May 18 2007,04:37) Jerry Falwell, by all accounts of people who knew him was a warm and caring individual who exemplified the christian lifestyle. I am not aware of anyone who considered him a hypocrite.

You may not agree with the man, and I didn't, but are the things you harbor in your head about him, and the things you say-- are they really true? Are you sure they are accurate?
I'm not up for an intellectual argument on the pros and cons of this guy as I know only as much as I have read about him from across the world but if we are to establish rules of engagement when presenting vigorous views on topics should we not follow them ourselves?

Who is the unimpeachable source that you quote giving the glowing personal reference for Falwell? Of course, you can't name them and nor do you have any way of knowing whether they were talking shit yet you present the comments as a factual defence of the arsehole (oops my prejudice is showing).

Mate we are throwing up flares on a site that is intended to provide us with entertainment, not presenting arguments to the Supreme Court.

Based on my understanding of the bloke's record, I think a natural dislike of him is mandatory amongst anybody who considers themselves a reasonable and fair-minded human being. If guys want to go a little overboard with the abuse then more power to them.

Don't worry, it only seems kinky the first time

My point is simply that all I need to say is that I believe he was wrong.

We had a fundamental difference in metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy. He didn't invade other countries, he never killed anyone, he didn't torture and rape thousands, he never exterminated ethnic or racial groups.

He believed a certain thing, and he promoted that belief. I have a completely different view of reality than he did. But I have observed people who really don't know anything about public figures rail about them with language and hyperbole all out of proportion. Then when they get called on it, they retroactivelly look up some critical information to back up their previous unsubstantiated tirade.

I hope my epitaph reads better than that. I am uneasy about what you mean to say, but I doubt the intention of your statement was as insulting as it actually reads. I suspect that the quote above is your perverse way of saying he was a good man. Because he did not commit the worst of crimes, well, therefore, he merits special reverence (imagine a letter of recommendation that used your words).

In fact, it is not enough to say that he was wrong. To say only that he was wrong is atrociously inadequate.

He professed piety while enriching himself beyond the wildest dreams of those who are truly suffering.

He lied to the desperate and the needy by pretending to be what he was not, a man of God, while simultaneously lining his pockets with the money of the duped until his sick heart could finally deceive no longer, all the while putting up walls between people by funding divisive politicians and religiously intolerant, rapture hungry misanthropes.

I detect a note of sneering arrogance in the rationale for your post. I agree that it is sometimes a problem when people pile on with public figures. But he was no average politician, and I assure you that many like myself hold the sincere opinion that he was a hypocrite who estranged and hurt many people.
