Just out of curiousity, what specifically do you hate Jerry Falwell so much for?
Before you respond, think carefully, and don't give some vague generic crap, or ad hominem attack, or something you heard from someone elses talking points, or something you go look up in another browser window before you reply.
I want to know what each of you above me really know about him, specifically, that he has done. Without all the empty words, name calling, or vague put-downs.
Just the facts. Specifically, what do you know about, that he has done, that has earned him so much hate from you personally.

Pretty fucking hilarious:

But that bit of humour unleashed a single suit that took 5 years to resolve at a cost of millions of dollars. Imagine if he had just had the humility to live by his Christian precepts and turn the other cheek?
It is very reasonable to hate religious figures who are politically active, and hypocrites who preach conservatism while violating its basic tenets surely deserve no approbation.

"Hate" is a loaded word. He blamed 911 specifically on , Gays (both sexes), picked on Jews, picked on other Christians (not of his church). In other words for one espousing extreme piousness he was really not particularly "christian" in outlook, and to boot a hypocrite. How the "mighty" have fallen. Just recently he publically asked God herself for another 15 years of life. Guess she wasn't listening, or thought he didn't deserve it.
Grunyen, you think he has been maligned? If so tell us why.

This confirms my theory that people could not discuss someone they disagreed with who was a public figure.
Sangabrials comment edits to "He was litigious".
Moe666's commet edits to "When the TV antena for his church..."
I don't know if that antena story is factually accurate. I also don't know that Falwell would qualify as litigious. Maybe so. Did he file lawsuits frequently? I only know of one.
Judges determine whether a lawsut merits time and cost of a court date. Judges did decide that this one was important enough that it made it all the way to the Supreme Court. I will accept that those judges knew what they were doing. That is no blame of Falwells.
My point is that these public figures are not 2 dimensional bad-guys like villains from GI Joe or Marvel comics. Jerry Falwell, by all accounts of people who knew him was a warm and caring individual who exemplified the christian lifestyle. I am not aware of anyone who considered him a hypocrite.
Larry Flynt even said that the two of them became friends, and that he had a deep respect for Falwell. You may not agree with the man, and I didn't, but are the things you harbor in your head about him, and the things you say-- are they really true? Are you sure they are accurate?
I know that Falwell *did not* blame 911 on gays, because I took the time to hear what he actually said and understand what he meant. I wasn't trying to play "gotcha" and twist his words to what I wanted to hear.
My point is simply this, I think it is intellectually lazy to fall into this team play mentality. We act like soccer fans (or American college football fans) who despise the other team beyond all reason. Accurac and specificity are imprtant. Search your heart and ask yourself if you really know anything about Jerry Falwell, and that knowledge is what you are basing your feelings, attitude, and language in response on-- or have you simpy painted a bad guy that you know little about, but is easy to attack.

I for one hope Fred Phelps follows soon.
I'm happy to be intellectually lazy about this guy!Attached Files

Sorry to report the antenna story is acurate. Appeared in esquire in the late 80's, one revelation in many. Cannot remember the reporters name but he spent a year investigating old Jerry.
No cannot hate anyone but have a slight aversion to someone who thinks he has the answer to my personal salvation and how I should live.

That lawsuit by a JUDGE has not yet been tossed by the current JUDGE. More here. Don't put too much faith in judges.
As far as Falwell is concerned, here is a small taste of some of the suits he pursued.
