(stogie bear @ Apr. 30 2007,15:59) How did you manage to scam a mortgate like that?
Standard repayment, variable interest, no penalty capital payments mortgage, they are the basic no frills ones. The mortgage companies hate it & some won't give you it. But I insisted at the time or would take my business else where, they all wanted to get you into endowments at the time, what a scam they were. I just payed enough in to clear all bar about £180 that worked out as around 0.80p. when i did it, but there have been interest rate rises. The dumbo's in the mortgage place didn't see it coming. I walked in with cash in a tesco bag dumped it on the counter & said i want to pay that into this mortagage account number. As soon as you have the receipt they have legally accepted it. Oh dear never mind.

I put my answer is not really covered here, but could have voted I'm comfortable... could always use more!

I could perhaps quit my job, move to the LOS, and live a very quiet life, without working. But I'd really have to watch expenses and am worried that inflation, or depreciation of the dollar could leave me old and broke.

Maybe I'd be bored and should try to find work in Thailand, on Forum member suggested I could be a math teacher.

if working, what would be important to me is an enjoyable working envirment and a flexible schedule wherby i had lots of vacation time, even if it meant my salry was meager, since I could get along with no salary.

I wonder how easy it is to switch from retirement visa to work visa and vice versa, and weather it's easier to do one way or the other?

Back home, I lead a simple life where I can save money despite my travels to the LOS. I don't really need to spend the money that everyone seems to need to spend in farangland.

I'm debt free. Strongly believe that one should remain debt free unless it's an investment.

Don't own a car, not nescessary where I live.

Mine fits in the majority of the anwers, but that's because I'm stooopid enough to keep staying in a place like Hong Kong! If I were living in BKK or KL I would enjoy a much better life since will earn the same...anyway..choices

I voted I am comfortable but could always use more. Been working ex-pat in income tax free countries since 1995, so that has helped a lot. Mortgage paid off 5 years ago, no need to have a car working overseas.

Biggest advantage is my current job has a lot of holiday time, so this gives a lot of time to visit LOS and other places of interest.

Dream would be to spend 6 months back home and 6 months in LOS, but I think that is still a ways off.

I worked my ass off for 24 yrs and am now doing ok. Can pretty much do what I want anywhere I want, or not work at all, but then I'd go crazy from boredom, so I work. I like the intellectual challenge and social engagement. It keeps you fit.

The working had its drawbacks, some long-term. I became a tough nut working with executive lunatics in telecom companies. Sometimes it shows up on the forum, the fighting, kill anyone who comes near mentality. At one point I had 2600 employees in 11 countries. For that 3 year period I cannot remember a time of day, let alone a day, where I did not work. That helped my 2nd divorce. I quote, "Well you're never here anyhow, so what's the difference?".

However, I guess I am happy I did that for the long-term benefits, but I cannot anymore. Now I work hard, but not excessive as I used to. It's not in me anymore.

I answered "comfortable but could use more". Good job with a good income, good benefits, but child support makes me have to save for big ticket items. Of course, after the kiddo turns 18, child support will stop but then the college expense. The kiddo is a serious brain so hopefully scholarships are on the way.

I live in L.A., hate this place but stuck here for another 6 yrs at the minimum. I don't require much as far gadgets and such so looking to move abroad. Been looking at Cebu City, anyone have any advice, opinions? Buy a house close to the beach, open up a small tourist business, reclaim my peace of mind. Been to PH, love PH. I'm ready to retire but that's still a good 20 yrs down the road unless I can get out of the States, which is my goal. Hope I can shrink the timeline to 10 yrs down the road.

I remember that when I was in my 20's, I thought I'd retire sometime in my 30's but now I'm in my early 40's, so I'll take retiring in my 50's. I surely expected more out of myself but I'm healthy, comfortable, not poor but definitely not as rich as I imagined.

Cebu City, my island in the sun. Ok, that's the plan.

                              (relpax @ Apr. 30 2007,09:17) well given that i am a resident......

                              oh and i am married.
You are a married resident who fucks around with LB...!

Man, maybe you should not have gotten married, because with your LB interest and potential for deep pockets, you had better be prepared for the possibility of a nasty divorce and paying lots of alimony to an angry ex-wife...

actually i got married before my interest with LBs, so not getting married was as clear of an answer. now... keeping my dick in my pants is a valid option for sure.
