beefy......... if you are a bike freak like me you owe yourself a trip to Cambodia..... you can rent a big 175 or 250 in Phnom Penh for 6 dollars per day and go tear it up in the country. as soon as you leave the city there is no tar or cement to be found; EVERY road is off-road in cambo and it's a bikers dream. i have a local friend who lives in PP and we rent 2 bikes and go out to his village in Prey Veng for a few days; you can do the same deal. it's like going back in time a hundred years and the road conditions are great for fucking around; watch the soft sand in places.

write me if you ever want to do this and I can hook you up pretty good; hell, i may even meet you there sometime. I was there in May and can't wait to go back.

added bonus; very young Viet girls all over the place willing to fuck for peanuts

I will hold you to that Jon lol

Not this trip but my next trip to LOS. Im in. i havent done off road since i was a teenager but whenever im in LOS i get an R6, R1 or a CBR600 and thrash the hell out of the poor thing.Bloody expensive to rent but hey where on hoilday.

On my last trip, my last day was spent in Phuket Racing some other fella with a death wish for 5-6hours u no what the hills are like in phuket they just wind round and round, we went out into some neighbouring villages and i saw some stuff i hadnt seen and wouldnt have seen had i not had the bike. Couldnt tell you where it was or how we got there, we just rode, then when it hit 5 or 6 we headed back. to be honest i think it was the most enjoyable day i had. But this off road stuff sounds even more interesting. Id be interested in some pics if youve got any.

One cool guy, and yes they get real serious. Ran the very first overland trip through Lao and into Southern China, and got write ups all over the place. Drinks enough for ten men, and gets through more of the local female population on a trip than most guys would do in three life times! However, a real serious bike man.

stogie, if you are reading this send up the pic that I sent to you with me standing next to that white Honda; that was taken in Cambo, about 3 hours east of Phnom Penh. I have some other stuff from the country but it's all on paper; when i go out in the country there i just take a disposable camera lest my real one gets fucked up. if I get a chance to scan those in before i go away i will send those to the clubhouse as well.

if you want to rough come over there and check it out; my buddies parent's house is in a village 3 hours from the capital and it's like the land that time forgot; the electricity to the lights is from a car battery. fan; forget it. telephone? get serious. no running water or toilet either; the nearest tree is the 'loo' for both sexes, and your shower is from a bucket out of the local well. half the kids out there are wearing either rags or nothing at all; visit this place if you want to really appreciate your western upbringings.

ya, phuket is kind of cool for riding, but the hills there are very dangerous; I like fun but I wanna see my golden years some day. I usually just get a little honda dream 100CC like I had on Samui to ride around the island; safer because I know I am limited LOL.

see ya over there next time; i want to hit cambo again in april or may; too busy until then.

lol. Im up for it. When i did Kenya i had to do that for one day and it killed me, but i learnt from it. as u said u appreciate your western upbringing.

Lets make a deal. A pact so to speak

Ill take care of you in Phuket, ill rent u an R1 and show you how to take those winding turns at 60 without grazing your Knee. In return you can show me cambodias trails.

                Lovely jubly....

OK Beefy......Given it some thought.....Pity you didn't want info on Bangkok/Pattaya/phuket/Rayong/Krabi/Hua Hin/Sukhothai/Phitsanulok/Songkhla these
would have been easier. However, Chiangmai.....As you are into bikes, I would suggest a 3/4 day drive to Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain. The drive is stupendous on a bike, and it's only three quarters of an hour outside Chiangmai. Mountain roads at their best, and all sealed.
Take the Hang Dong Road south, through San Patong to Jum Thong and there you turn right onto the mountain road, you can't help but notice the mountain, as it towers a staggering seven thousand feet plus. There is a waterfall that just drops out of the side of the mountain, and cascades down hundreds of feet. You
will need to take some photo ID with you as there is a Thai army special forces unit half way up coupled with a rather large listening post. Fairly sensitive.
OK too far, try the "Samoeng Loop" a favourite with bikers. Take the same road out of town, with the exception of turning right before you get to Hang Dong where the sign post says Samoeng, the road cuts straight back into the mountains, and the scenery is out of this world. Only the one road, and it brings you back to Mae Rim, via the Mae Sa valley (water falls and working elephants) which is only ten clicks north of Chiangmai city. A half day leisurly ride. Northern Thailand is a bikers dream, and they come from all over the world to ride there.
A real quick trip is to ride up to "Wat Pra Doi Suthep" Apart from the incredible temple on the top (4500 feet) The road up (all sealed) is full of twists and turns, and is a great ride. Only 20 Km to the top, so it doesn't take long. Spend some time at the temple, and cruise down. You can eat it in a couple of hours or so. The views on the way up are stupendous, and there is a half way rest area, to stop for a fag and a quick beer.
There are even better rides further out, but take a lot longer. Take a look at the maps on the GT-Rider site to get an idea.
Chiangmai has some of the most beautiful temples in the whole of Thailand. The one on the mountain being the most well known, however the most revered is "Wat Phra Sing" which used to house the "Emerald Buddha" (now in Bangkok) "Wat Chedi Luang" has the highest stupa of all the temples, and IS impressive. There are litterally hundreds of them "Wat Chang Mun" is the oldest, and right in the middle of the old walled city, over seven hundred years old and dates back to the origins of Chiangmai. "Wat Umong" Is well worth a trip, a little out of town just off the Suthep Road. It's tunneled into the cliff wall, most unusual. Last one coming up......Take a ride out to "Chiang Dow" about an hour by road directly north of Chiangmai. (take the Mae Rim road) Chiang Dow is set in the mountains of Fang, and there are a cluster of temples inside the mountains, steeped with large Buddha images, the temperature is near zero inside the mountain, so take a sweater.
OK temples are not your go. How about a dip in the hot springs with a little nymphette? There are several geo-thermal areas aroung Chiangmai, San Khampaeng being the closest...Half an hour out of town going east on the Bo Sang road.
Bo Sang is the home of the Thai umbrella manufacturing industry, and the brollies out there are worth seeing, and very decorative, also the local silk factories are all along the San Khampaeng road, and worth a look too. If you're not into silk, just ask them for a punnet of mulberries, super delicious. The silk worms eat the leaves and we eat the berries! Way to go. Chug down some free samples of the local mulberry wine, BUT watch the drive back, a narrow road, and that shit has a punch. (20% plus)
Bath houses! Yes Chiangmai has more than it's fair share, and should be way up the top of your hit list of "must do's" A couple of them even have some resident ladyboys. I can think of no better way of cutting out a couple of hours, that relaxing in a hot tub with a stunning piece of local breeding, having my every whim catered for. Yes! That too! Talk about vacuum cleaners, you just have to watch that your head doesn't cave in. Here you really need a guide and mentor, as
only Thai is spoken in the various establishments, although you could wing it, and just point (rude in Thailand to point) just indicate. All the girls have numbers, and it's normal just to whisper the number to the Mama san.
In order of my preference......Chiangmai Massage in the Phucome Hotel on Huay Gaew Road going out of the city past Central department store.

Green Hills Massage, in the Chiangmai Green Hills Hotel, not too far before the Phucome hotel

Sayuri Massage, a real icon, and is over the other side of the Ping river. Take the main road over the main "Narawat Bridge" going due east, and turn left at the second set of lights, you'll see the signs in English for Sayuri.

President Massage in the President Hotel, almost impossible to describe how to get to this one, but get a map and look for the President Hotel.

Ping Payom "Entertainment Complex" on Suthep road, just on the corner of the back road to Chiangmai airport. Great area, and great service.

There are heaps of others, but these are the better ones. OK so you are now squeaky clean, both inside and out, what to do next?.......
If you are into zoos, Chaingmai has one of the best open plan zoos in the world, all natural settings, and you can drive through it, a cool few hours.
OK you smell like a stale Rhino, time for another quick hot tub and a rub!
Feeling real touristy, you could try the Night Bazaar in Changklan Road, all the usual fake watches, at half Bangkok prices, and some great eating places. Catch one of the local cabaret shows at Galare on Changklan around seven thirty, and then head off in search of some serious fun. Unless you pluck one of the cabaret LBs for a short time, or maybe time for another quick bath?

Want to be a real tourist, take a drive out to the "Meo" Hill tribe village up the Mae Sa valley (45 mins) and have a squiz at the "Long Necks" if you havn't seen them, they can be fun, and the young girls are more than eager to earn some extra bucks!

An off track place is the McKean Centre south of the city, on an island in the middle of the Ping River, a real live Lepper Colony, and one of the few left in the world (it's curable) Go down and drop a donnation in the box and have a look round...Different!! OK back to the bath house for a quick one!

You could always get up to the Mae Kok river and do some white water rafting, and elphant trekking.....No, not you? OK take another bath, and think about it.

There are a heap of things listed above that you will not find in the usual guide books, the obvious ones you will.

I could go on but my fingers are numb! It would seem rather unfortunate that I will be in Chiangmai at the same time as yourself, but, as a guide/interpreter/drinking companion/et al, MY SERVICES DO NOT COME CHEAP!!

I leave this god for saken cold country on the 8th April but Eva-Air has knocked me for a day so i dont arrive till the afternoon of the 9th, bangkok for 2-3Nights then off up to Chiang Mai. I had only planned to stay there for 2-3days as most of the people i had spoken to about it were in there late teens early 20's and just said its nothing like the party capitals so i might get bored look at a few temples get bored somemore.

I will be going back and giving them a piece of my mind...how the hell can u get bored with all that to do. Maybe its cos they were only in search of go-go/beer bars. Dont get me wrong i love um just as much as the other fella but if i only came here to shag for a month i think i might get bored. Or am i just saying that....

"Teeny Boppers" the lot of them! As the young bull said in the field to his father, "hey dad lets race down and screw one of those cows down there" His father, the old bull, said "no son, lets amble down and screw the lot of them"
They have no idea what life is all about. Every capitol city of every province in Thailand that I have visited (seventy four out of the seventy six in the kingdom) I have always found great action. Maybe not the same as NEP or Patpong, but good solid lady/ladyboy action never the less. I always manage to have a good time where ever I go.
It is really up to the individual, and what he/she is after. You are a bike man, so I suggested "bike things" but hell, there are endless things to do in any city in Thailand. Chiangmai also has a great Go Kart track, which is internationally sanctioned, and provides enless houre of fun, that's of course if you're a "petrol head" like me. Anyone of eighteen should not be allowed in the realm period! It's illegal to consume alcohol at a licenced premises by any person under the age of twenty., and that includes "Farangs"
This is also being enforced in various areas. So to all you "Teeny Boppers" be careful, it means a night in the local watch house, and a thousand baht fine if caught. If you get intoxicated and are abusive it will be more...Take note.
Chiangmai has it's Go-Go bars like everywhere else, even some Thai ones in the back streets (good fun, and LBs too) One of them has about a dozen LBs working in it, two of which are post ops. You can also get a brilliant BJ in the corner of one of them for the princely sum of one hundred baht! That's the problem with these young blokes, no sense of adventure!
You arrive in Chiangmai at the onset of "Songkran" when all hell breaks loose in the city for about a week. Just about all the working ladyboys from Bangkok/Pattaya/Phuket come to Chiangmai for the week, the fact being that a whole heap of them were born in Chiangmai, and it's a time to pay respects to your family, as well as cutting loose.
If I say anymore I will need a TAT licence! The real bad news is that at the time of your arrival in Chiangmai, the local temperature will be around forty plus, hence the water festival which heralds the start of the Thai Lunar New Year.
The worst news of the lot is......I DON"T DRINK BEER! I drink quality scotch, or single malt, with the odd bottle of wine in between, capped off by a bottle of Cointreau at the after hours Thai clubs. Sorry, but it's not a cheap experience!....... The Cynic

Buses, trains, and planes (no boats) get fully booked that time of the year, and I mean BOOKED! Also your hotel. Hi Beefy,

Listen mate I've got numerous friends in the airline business so stick to Thai airways as I have heard that "cheaper" outfits - I think the new one is "Orient" or something . usually take short cuts to undercut the established airlines - it makes sense afterall.

Never compromise your safety mate. Did you know that you can get to Thailand for as little as 350 sterling on Turkish airlines ! Do you think I want those muppets flying ?
