  This thread is really interesting donnnny.....and good reading, thanks for your observations.  by all means try not to  OVERpay and for sure  NEVER be one of those fools who takes 'em to Emporium or other useless, evil places to spend your dough!  Throwing money at these girls is what they surely want for the benefit of their families or their crack habit, but will they respect or like you more if you are doing this?  Like donnnnny I have found quite the opposite to be true;  don't come across as a sucker and an easy mark and you will be respected more.

 One girl I knew had 50K US thrown at her between January and May one year.....from a Yank who made us all look bad...... and where was she in May after all that attention and cash was thrown at her from mister X? on a holiday with mister Y {JaiDee}, and 'sponsor' boy was a distant memory. I don't think you should feel guilty. There are well other factors that screw the whole things up, such as for example the highest THB against USD in 5 years!!
Is that really necessary? Economy is already doing not so well..the rising property prices are a balloon ready to burst..and China is eating up all the remained competitiveness of Thailand export market.
In short..heading for disaster..and a high Thai baht doesn't help for sure!

I'm not suggesting we all become 'cheap charlies'  only that we pay market rate.

I don't suggest we don't tip... only that we tip what is the norm... not hugely over it.

I don't have a problem about paying for a service, but lets all be sensible otherwise we'll "kill the golden goose".

Good warning on benchmark effect on others, Brit.  But I'm with kahuna on this one!  We are not talking silly money, anyway.  I dont believe that sometimes paying more than 1500 ST is the thin end of a 7000 baht wedge.   Is 1500 really the 'market rate' for the whole range of Nana LBs?

I tend to overpay a bit at market stalls too, but not by big bucks, and I'm not (usually) a mug when negotiating a deal (Win/Win I'm looking for).  Good for you if you get the LBs you want at less.

as I say in the Rookie thread [ and PLEASE no one quote me on any of this shit, I have gotten grief before] I believe the Nana girls want and expect 2K for short these days..... 1500 may be OK, depending on if the rent is due and they haven't had a buy-out that night but I think they may be let down by this price to be honest.

again....shhhhh...... I always pay 2K for short and never do all-nighters so 2K is basically my limit and I think very fair for both sides and a typical pay for services in BKK these days....if I take 2 and I often do I give 'em 2K each

I don't want to make this a pissing contest...but I seriously doubt that my extra 500 bhat, or dinner or drinks, or 200 bhat for a cheap pair of shoes is having any impact on the Thai economy or what you pay or will have to pay in the future...and you can't blame the greenhouse effect on me...

In case you don't know, there are girls who are already asking 70,000 bhat an hour, both Thai and PI ladies...I don't know if they get that all the time, but I suspect that they do sometimes...

I don't think what I do is stupid or ignorant and I don't think the girls laugh at me...maybe because I'm old and ugly, but not for what I pay and tip...

I don't know what the standard is...but in Aug/Sept the little Temptations femboy in my avatar only asked for 1500 bhat ST and my new fav in Obsessions (her clone) only asked for 1500 bhat ST...So I don't offer to pay more...

Other girls I was with on that trip with asked for 2000 bhat ST...and that seems fair...

I agree with donnnny also. But no one has mentioned that tipping in Thailand really doesn't have a cultural history as such. Farangs and tip and what Thai won't accept free money. But Thais don't tip.
As for the influence of Japanese whales or over paying Farangs, sorry but yes it has had an influence because it is not just one or two but thousands. Once a hooker gets overpaid, she has a new standard fee and she brags to all her friends to pump up her "face".

It seems to me that a lot of folks here are missing the point. Entertainment prices have increase sharply in Thailand over the last couple of years, and not just because a few people are overpaying in the bars.

Yesterday I checked the rates at the Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya and was stunned to find they had more than doubled since I was last there a little over a year ago. Then I checked the Marriott: up about 75% from last year.

Prices in Thailand have been so low by world standards for so long that we're all spoiled. Who can blame the vendors we're buying from, whether international hotel chains or local....uh, entrepreneurs for charging the highest price they can get for what they're selling. If they used to charge 25% of the US price and they double their prices, that's still only 50% of the US price and it still looks like a bargain to most visitors (just not to those you used to pay the 25%).

Get used to it, guys. I know we old farts all moan all the time about golden ages passing, never to return. This time you'd better believe us. Golbalization has a lot of aspects and a general trend toward the leveling of pricing around the global for almost everything is one of them without a doubt.
