Mind the crevasse: The amazing 3D pavement art that has pedestrians on edge!
After a sudden shift in the Earth's crust, the ground has cracked open. What was terra firma is now a gaping crevasse. And into it - his arms raised in terror - plunges a hapless pedestrian on a shard of rock.
In another apocalyptic scenario, a family desperately struggle to cross what remains of a street. They hold hands while balancing on islands of tarmac.
Below them a rushing urban river laps against rocks that glow with volcanic intensity.
But, of course, neither of these scenes is what they appear. They are giant optical illusions conceived by German artist Edgar Mueller.
He spent five days, working 12 hours a day, to create the 250 square metre image of the crevasse, which, viewed from the correct angle, appears to be 3D. He then persuaded passers-by to complete the illusion by pretending the gaping hole was real.
'I wanted to play with positives and negatives to encourage people to think twice about everything they see,' he said. 'It was a very scary scene, but when people saw it they had great fun playing on it and pretending to fall into the earth.
'I like to think that later, when they returned home, they might reflect more on what a frightening scenario it was and say, "Wow, that was actually pretty scary".'
Mueller, 40, used acrylic wall paint to create the scene. He trained a camera lens on his work surface to help him fully visualise the idea before painting in the incredible detail to give an impression of depth on the flat surface.
He added: 'The conditions were difficult because if it started raining before a section had dried it could all wash it all away. I was very lucky that I managed to get each part done before the heavens opened.'
The picture appeared on the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, as part of the town's Festival of World Cultures.
The artist used the same technique to create the street-turned-river scene in the western German city of Geldern.
It commemorated the 30th anniversary of an international competition of street painters, which takes place in the city every summer.
Mueller, who has previously painted a giant waterfall in Canada, said he was inspired by the British 'Pavement Picasso' Julian Beever.Attached Files

Pictured: The daredevil surfer taking amazing photos from INSIDE huge breaking waves...
These stunning images capture the power and glory of waves as they are about to crash down onto the shore.
They have been taken by surfer-turned-photographer Clark Little who swims in terrifying seas and crouches on shorelines to get the breathtaking images.
'I try to capture the beauty of these monstrous waves from the inside out,' said the father of two, who has just published his favourite images.
'I'm always in the water before dawn to try to snap that perfect picture as the sun rises.'
Many of the images were taken at Waimea Bay in Hawaii - the home of surfing and immortalised in the lyrics of the Beach Boys' song 'Surfin USA'.
They show perfect arcs of water and crystal 'caverns' which are turned into a kaleidoscope of colour by sand and rays of sunlight.
'I enjoy the power and beauty of the huge waves that roll through,' the 39-year-old said.
Clark, from Oahu, Hawaii, says he often risks his life to capture the 'perfect wave'. He said: 'I love the ocean - I am addicted to the waves. Especially places like Waimea Bay. 'I started surfing there in the 1990s and now I like to photograph it as much as possible.'
'Thanks to experience I can capture some of those heavy moments without getting slammed about myself. Well, most of the time...'Attached Files

Olay wrinkle cream TV advert banned after watchdog finds it is misleading!
The effectiveness of Olay has been challenged!
An advert that implied a skin cream could deliver a similar 'dramatic' effect to cosmetic injections has been banned for misleading viewers. The television commercial for Olay Regenerist claimed 'pentapeptides' in the cream had been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
A voice-over from beauty journalist Eve Cameron said: 'Women who aren't ready for cosmetic injections constantly ask me to recommend a skin cream that really works.
'So I was excited when this study, revealed at the World Congress of Dermatology, showed that pentapeptides are effective in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.'
The Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint challenging the evidence for the effectiveness of pentapeptides.
Proctor and Gamble Ltd, which owns Olay, said it had not intended to imply a comparison with cosmetic injections...

Daleks can't swim...
Volunteer Marc Oakland was stunned when he pulled the head of a Dalek from the murky depths of a pond he was helping to clean. The 42-year-old sales executive found part of Doctor Who€™s arch nemesis as he pushed a rake along the surface while wading waist-high in water. He said: €˜I€™d just shifted a tree branch with my foot when I noticed something dark and round slowly coming up to the surface.
