I make no claims as to the veracity of the number, I pass it on as it was told to me. It is certainly not precise but then the governments number was announced in October or so, based on expected arrivals to make up the shortfall.

My own observations told me that 2008 was busier than 2009.

Seems you like rumors. So how's that rumor about Nana closing coming along? Anyway I don't think 17M is even the official number of tourists: link. I really do believe TAT would love to fudge the numbers and may be doing so. It seems someone is being graded on how many tourists they deliver. Hence, all the downplaying of major negative events impact on tourism and the recent spin to boast quality over quantity as a work around. But the reality is they are reporting numbers that do not meet their objectives so it would take something more solid for me to believe they are making the numbers up as they go.

Speaking of thai's ganging up on farangs in a fight, has anyone ever witnessed other farangs joining in to even up the numbers because they sensed some kind of injustice. Just curious...

personally.... no i havnt,but then again i think it fair to say that many guys travel alone or in numbers of two or so, this is my observation.
what i can say and i know for fact as i have friends who testify,is that not only the individual Farang but groups are targeted and bullied in bars and shows by this i mean the well known Patpong bill padding,the fixing of price before event such as Frankie99 and his Gobshite Ming experience.
yes these are things i expect most of us allready know,but worth repeating here.
this is the interesting bit when a group of Farang wont have the "bullshite" its funny to note that the Thais arnt so fast to call in the troops and try a soi war.wheres the bottle then ? whats the problem not to confident they can handle it?
learn a lot about Thai mentality and the workings of prostitution from the above.
knowing when to get out of a bad situation safe and trouble free at times is the clever thing.
but it is also very important to be confident, assertive have eyes in the back of your head and ears of an elephant.
if you buckle every time the taxi driver asks you for 100 baht more then it says something about him but a lot about you,you are the one who is likely to get into shit sometime.

Sorry, but I just don't believe this story.

There's a guy on another forum who has a hard on (and not the good kind) for cascades and has a couple of times posted stories (check warnings at lb-69.com) about attacks there which sound equally odd.  

I've been to cascades many times and the worst that happened to me was being feloniously fondled.

As the debate seems to have spilled over to the general attitude of Thai's toward there visitors, here's my couple of stang's worth.

Whilst agreeing with most points you guy's have made, and there's no doubt the ' welcome ' is far from what it once was, i would have to say the category, in general, of visitors has fallen somewhat too. Faced with some of the punters the Thai's have to cope with these day's i'm sure most of us would 'loose it' at some stage.

Donnnny, and i only pick you out friend as you seem somewhat a 'veteran', so are as qualified as anyone to comment on the 'then and now'. I couldn't agree more with the points you make. I'd add that i now feel Thai's to be amongst the most racist on the planet, the corruption, at every level, is there for all to see, the education poor. Even Thai's will tell you the scum of the country gather in Pattaya, Pong and Nana, and we choose to mix with these types. Shit happens, everywhere, ask John Terry.

When i tire of the endless bollocks i head off up tp Issan. I'd be surprised if a few nights cruising any of the regions major cities left you ladyboyless at the end of the evening, just dont expect supermarket displays of them, you'll also meet a hell of a lot of fine folk........... who aint trying to rip you.

thats probably a fair comment,good points made,the point being that in general we mix with the p4p scene,hookers,people with very loose morals(not all thais are on the game) scammers, the smile is fake,the sex is bought,its all an act,some are drug addicts or reg users,some dont even like you ,just want your money,yes i know that i hear you say,but no i mean they REALLY dont like you,.
people who are playing this game often are not the full ticket,or are "on the edge",can flip, can be dangerous,can lie,can thieve.
they are not your average normal person within the average normal enviroment,at least the seasoned p4p workers are not anyway.
we choose to go to this enviroment so we play the game as thats all it is.

Can you provide any evidence of one single instance where a punter was fined anywhere in Thailand? Otherwise why make such a ridiculous statement that sends your credibility down to 0?

its not a rediculous statement its a fact , and if the thais needed to use it in court, they would against you.

Well, I just had my second negative experience with a Cascades girl.

I was walking around last night and bumped into a group of cuties. One caught my eye and so we agreed to go to Penthouse (for some reason, every girl I've had a bad experience with has suggested that place, not PB. Don't know why, but I'm beginning to take it as a warning sign now).

Once we got there, she started up with the "you pay me first" bullshit.

I declined and told her that if there was going to be a problem with that, I'd just leave. She said no problem, but immediately after showering she started up with it again, and so I left.

There was something VERY sketchy about her attitude, though. Seemed like she was contemplating robbing me, but couldn't figure out how to seperate me from my belongings and/or try to threaten me (very unlikely given the size difference).

She kept her hand in her purse the whole time she talked with me, so I think she was trying to make me think that she might have a weapon in there (which she probably did. But in the end, she couldn't work up the nerve and so I just bailed out of there without saying anything (or doing anything stupid like the OP did, like pushing her around).

Cascades is now definitely on my "don't bother" list. I'm not particularly interested in wading through a sea of drug addicts and psychos to get to the few decent girls, no matter how pretty they might be.

Girl's name was Beebee (or something like that). Cute, but a real PITA (pain in the ass).

The following day (stupidly - I shouldn't have waited) I went to the hospital and after about $500 USD in stitches and treatment later I'm more or less good as new.

He first said she plunged the knife deep into his leg, and the blood gushed out. then he waits a day to go to the Hospital? If he was cut that bad what about infection? You waited a day

yeahhh thats crazy if i would be stabbed by a knife and so much blood gushing out the first thing i would do is go to the hospital for professional treatment.

i think i know the reason why he didnt go to the hospital first if that story really happen. and if it really happen he made some changes to it already

I guess I am just crazy (and I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way) but someone pull a knife on me, they better be coming hard..at that point all rules go out the door and the best man or lady is leaving...I mean the switch is turned....I have been stabbed and there are worse things in life and if ya half a brain there was something in that room he could have used to defeat this asshole ..pick up a lamp and toss it or the mattress and charge, take the weapon away and take her screaming back to the bar and tell the Mama san WTF!! what kind of place ya running here? Having said that i have been fucking ladyboys for years and never even come close to this kind of drama....maybe it helps being a bigger asshole than they are.....just a guess..
