I was told by an operator of a tourism business with a highly placed contact inside the government.

I make no claims as to the veracity of the number, I pass it on as it was told to me. It is certainly not precise but then the governments number was announced in October or so, based on expected arrivals to make up the shortfall.

My own observations told me that 2008 was busier than 2009.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

No doubt numbers are well down, however Phuket in January still seemed to be alive and well.
I had to queue for dinner in Patong at Fuji Japanese rest. and most nights i noticed the same.

Market forces will dictate the P4P industry for sure - and while tough times may cause sporadic social problems,
its just the reverse of the boom times when every unattached Issan lad or lass tried their time in the industry and prospered.

To me - the downturn doesn't mean the decent into oblivion and social decay - i see it as a tsunami that's cleansing the P4P
of types that really shouldn't be in the game and only the decent ones will remain.

The market cycles STILL exists for all industries - we just tend to forget, especially during years of financial prosperity.

If I were stabbed by a ladyboy in Nana I would be very reluctant to go to the police. I'm not sure how I would handle the fits of laughter after I explained my story. I don't know what my wife would say should my story end up on the local Thai news or back pages of a Thai newspaper.
In my twelve years in this country I have only seen a handful of fights between Thais and Farang. They have always ended up as nasty 5 on 1 type deals.
My advice: always have a couple of thousand baht tucked away somewhere. May never have to use it but it can be a real life saver. Think of it as cheap insurance.

I have a 500 baht note folded in my copy passport page, for just such occasion     Used to keep a bit more than that, until a pickpocket helped her/himself on Second Road!

As BM above says, a Thai on Farang fight is not pretty.  And 90+% brought on by the farang behaviour IMO.  On one occasion in Nana, 2 farangs were drunk and up for trouble, and I looked on as 10 thai guys appeared from all directions to give them a well-deserved beating.

If the stabbing story is true, the guy really managed to screw up by his actions (considering he had decided to pay).

I believe I witnessed the same beat down in the nana car park a few years ago.  One of the farangs was bragging that he was a stud boxer just at the moment the Thais appeared and kicked his ass.  He was totally disrespecting a Thai girl who I believe ordered the hit.  It all happened in less than a minute.

interesting and probably accurate take on this AZZA.
ive had the feel that things are in decline,by that i mean girls attitudes, prices ,scams, thefts, service,i could be wrong,it could just be only some changes,it could be me ,naturally things cannot ever "stay " as they "were",LOS is though is the kind of place that could possibly change rapidly at some point and by that i mean not for the better,so it is very possible that its best is over allready, that is from certain points of view, mayby such as ours.

I had a strange deal occur to me a few years back. I had called Mint (longdickmint) over to my room at the landmark late one night. All went well in the beginning...did a short-time bb session with her...(had done before many times) and when I gave her the 4k...she flipped! It was really weird...in this case she demanded 10k baht, got loud, picked up an ashtray. I'm former military, spec ops, and really fit at 57...but my opinion...unless its life threatening the last thing to do is hurt someone in Thailand...because then you are a target on the street. I ended up giving mint another 2k but did it by positioning her against the slightly open door and when she reached for it..shoved her out. It was strange. Other than that, I've never had a problem in 10 years....was just in Thailand last month and had lots of fun with Cascade girls (and others).

My opinion, you should have just given her the money and not attempted an attack unless your trained and know close combat moves like krav maga techniques or similiar...otherwise you setup yourself for injury...your really lucky that the knife missed your femoral artery otherwise you may have lost your life. If I were you, in the future, just go back to the Mamasan and tell her what happended. Shit man, 2K baht is only $50-60 bucks....price of a good meal...not worth getting cut.

(Kuranyi @ Feb. 04 2010,20:30) Not a question of a newbie mistake or not.Could happen to anyone.

Its very hard to handle such a situation.Been into one myself last month in Pattaya.Thank god there was no knife involved.I could manage to kick her out of my apartment before she cud further damage. At the end i didnt pay what she demanded although she smashed a whole in my door which costed me 1000THB more. But u just cant tolerate these trys.

Thats how Thailand got.I give them 5 more years then the tourism will be at its end cuz of their greed for money.Cambodia,Vietnam and Laos already offer much more value for your money.

Police is useless and can cause u even more problems.
i tend to agree with your 5 year theory and the thai greed for money .
You don't think the predicition is a little dramatic?
Probably not. been going there (los) since 1984. Real tourists , ie family groups would only  go there once in general, most would see though the thai smile and  over the top fussing of  kiddies,(who said it was a hot subject to touch the head?? i see thais  doing it to farangs  all the time) Oh ya we  don't  count lol
Mate  thais  in the  tourist areas,  pattaya cheng mai,  phuket  etc are greedy ugly and down right horrid to  tourists, from where ever they come.(mind you having said that tourists are down right horrid too.
Thailand would need to clean its act up  in many ways, first the beaches with there scams on sea scooters, 2nd the  two price system one for them one for everyone else, if we did this in sydney  there would be a united nations meeting about us .fucking racist australians.lol, 3rd prostitution would have to be stopped, and we all know that would be the end of half the tourists who go there.Lets not forget  prostitution is  illegal in thailand.
IF you look at any case such as this so called stabbing, the farang is always in a very difficult situation, prostitution being illegal, would land him a  fine.
No judge in thailand would fine against a local, unless you pay the cops a shit load of cash , before the offender is caught..

Personally i go to thailand for  sex and cheap holidays,i get what i want and  i pay for play. im not interested in free sex and  rarley have suido relationships with these  girls.
I DONT  FOR ONE MINUTE  THINK THIS STORY IS TRUE, it smacks of sensationalism  from a bloke ,who is well known for dishing out  crap about thailand.
IF it  did happen, why didnt the  so called expert go to the police and why did he  not name the girl????Ill tell you why, because its a load of  rubbish.
Thailand is   one of the most zenophobic countrys in the world if not the most zenophobic.
                        Thai rak thai.

No. It will depend on what happens to the local economy if tourists continue to stay away.

If the police get so desperate for money that farangs are just not safe from their tactics & the negative publicity keeps more tourists away, very quickly the place could descend into lawlessness.

The Volunteer Tourist Police in Pattaya could be the first casuality & whether we like them or not, they offer protection against the scammers & attacks made against farangs. Take them away & we become very vulnerable. There is a thin veneer of civility in places like Pattaya IMO & if half the barworkers were going hungry - where do you think they will look for money?

I mentioned this elsewhere but I will repeat it again - the estimated number of tourists to LOS in 2009 were reported as being up on 2008 at around 17 million. This was an invention on the part of the Tourist Office to save face or to maintain confidence. The real number of tourists last year were around 6.5 million. This year could be worse.

BTW, there are many bargirls barely getting by now. My comment about half of them going hungry, I worry that the day is not that far off if things don't pick up soon.

you are spot on,i do agree with your take,Thailand can be very dangerous at a slight turn,we are after all ,dealing with hookers, prositutes give them "nice" names if you want but hookers all the same, sometimes on drugs ( how would you know half the time?)
myself as ive stated i WOULD take action against anyone who i deem to be a direct and possibly instant threat to me,but only then, i do not mean i will attack and attempt disable a person who is about to cut the sunday joint,i differentiate between the two.
as for MINT and 10 k well she is a superstar if shes such a star mayby she can get on broadway mayby not though, they make me feckin laugh sometimes.
im sure though if i had agreed 4 and then she wanted to double after i wouldnt be happy,im afraid thats a little bit too much, her taking the piss if you ask me,think about it its actually robbery with threats to kill or harm........a different ball game, as we know there are often more than one way to play ball.
BTW was this MINT workin freelance?

Can you provide any evidence of one single instance where a punter was fined anywhere in Thailand? Otherwise why make such a ridiculous statement that sends your credibility down to 0?
