In 17 months, I've spent 199,254 baht on my live-in LB girlfriend (Yeah, I keep good records!). That's all in, including books, clothes, braces, school, cosmetics, hormones, doctors, help with family, phone and phone cards, etc., but excluding travel and food. Target has always been about 10K/month, so I have been overshooting a bit (mostly in the beginning). It's an amount that I can easily afford.

Sound like a lot? No, when one looks at factors other than the number itself.

I don't regret a single baht of it. If she were to be gone tomorrow morning when I wake up, I'd be sad, but wouldn't regret the money one bit. Those who know her know she's no golddigger. Even if she were to leave and take every single thing in our apartment, I'd still get away at a fraction of the cost of my divorce from the white witch 25 years ago.

In that 17 months, I've spent a TOTAL of 9300 baht on extracurricular activities. If I were to just look at things financially (and I definitely don't), I'm waaay ahead of the game. How much would the average P4Per spend on sanuk in 17 months? The tangibles, such as sex, cooking, cleaning, repairing my clothes, overseeing my health and diet, organizing bills and responsibilities, dealing in Thai with the Thai people that I have to deal with, etc, if one could even find somebody to provide those services with the quality and care that she does, would be expensive add-ons.

And the intangibles? Her ability to make me laugh on a daily basis, being greeted at the door after work EVERY day with a cold drink, her Thai language lessons, the intelligent conversations (for a Thai girl) about a movie we've just seen or a book that she's just read, the real joy she has and gives when we travel, always treating my friends and acquaintances with good humor and playfulness, her inability to be cranky for more than 5 minutes (seriously), her lack of bullshitting me with "you handsome man" type nonsense (and she never uses that other crap word, "love") ... these quality of life items are immeasurable.

This is not an ode to LB love, simply a monger appreciating the nice ride. I think anybody who goes along with their eyes open, no crazy expectations and no crazy vendettas when things eventually end up in the dumpster is just enjoying another facet in their life. Will it pass JD's 5-year test? Doubt it, but I'm really not thinking that far ahead.

They aren't all the same and there are a few gems out there (although it probably took one or two hundred mining expeditions to find this one!)
