Interesting post Brocklanders , we await the pro Philippines retorts with bated breath .
Not so much all pro-Pi, just maybe a more balanced viewpoint

There are a lot of captain save-a-ho's out there who think that they are helping the girl/ladyboy out by sending money to a person they never met in real life and likely will never meet.
And we all know that there are no Thai ladies that fool foreigners into sending them money, and absolutely no lazy thai boyfriends/families in the background soaking up this particular version of foreign indirect investment!

I would guess there have to be far, far more guys sending money to Thai sweethearts than Pi sweethearts??

People have to understand the group/clannish mentality of Filipinos.
And family is not a hugely strong force in Thailand as well?? (And most other relatively poorer countries)

It's the only culture and group of people who will straight up ask you, "my birthday is coming up, what will be my pasalubong(gift)?" They actually instruct you to get them a gift...its not a joke. They may mask it as if they are kidding but underneath that facade is a real lack of understanding of ethics and morality.
And you don't get e-mails and sms's from Thai girls reminding you it is their birthday soon?

It is also a DIFFERENT set of morals and ethics. Most people from countries like the Pi and Thailand are vastly less wealthy than most people on this forum.

Being hungry and helping your family survive produces a different view of life, and asking perceived rich people for help does not seem such a horrible thing to do in my book.

It's a duplicitous culture because its Catholic and Asian...a dangerous combination. Just commit any sins and lie and cheat and scam and then go to confession with the priest and walang problema....clean hands.
And how many working girls do you know in Thailand that go to the temple for a few days every 6 months to do exactly the same with the buddhist monks.....cleansing, asking forgivemess, doing good things for a few days...then the fact that they are not in the nicest profession in the world is all forgiven and forgotten

I still think the ability to speak English makes this issue appear much more prevalent in the Pi v Thailand.

this is what im talking about.... it is true and i agree about the statements told about pi ladyboys,,, but it could be the same with thais...

but i was a bit cautious and just waited for some one else to make a very good, well-written argument.

          excellent!!!

Whoa, great timing, this actually happened to me this week with a gal from Cebu I've been chatting with since the new year. (Not a cam girl.) Almost the same words too! She's never really asked for anything before, & I have no intentions of sending her anything more than my good wishes, but I still think you're painting this scene with a pretty broad brush, ie., as been pointed out a lot of what you say can be applied to a lot of groups.

Plus it is pretty widespread in a fair amount of the developing world, to ask outright for $$ from newly found family members or lovers, rude & crude to us perhaps, but self evident for people who don't have much but with a connection to a relationship to someone who is obviously much more well off.... pretty standard operating procedure... I've experienced it from Thai, Viet & Panamanian borders. I wouldn't necessarily call it "a real lack of understanding of ethics and morality." More of a culture clash of differing ethical expectations. Some of the girls def know how to play it tho..... & I do agree with the duplicity inherent in Filipino culture, but that is a mode of operation to me, not immorality. Theft is immoral.

(Hey some women in the West just assume you will float their wishes by asking in a more passive aggressive way for the same juice.)

In the end it's up to the guy if he wants to be parted from his $$$, I don't fault the gals from asking.

                        I just don't get this

Why ONLY your good wishes? Why would you NOT send her a gift?

                        Either:

                        1. You are chatting to her because you like here and want to be friends. Friends give each other gifts, right? So why would you NOT volunteer to send her a gift?

                        2. You want sex with her, in which case it is a business transaction, and you should send her a gift for her time

Either way, you are getting some kind of benefit/enjoyment out of the interaction, and it seems to me to just be the right thing to do to share a little of your relative wealth with the other person

                        • Great posts Stewart and well said. In Filipino culture, one way of showing thoughtfulness to one's family, friends, or co-workers is by giving them pasalubong especially if he or she comes back after a long absence. A pasalubong is basically a token gift that one gives to express his being able to remember people close to him while he was gone. It could be a simple souvenir of a place that one has been to, such as key chains, a book, a pen, etc. Or it could be an expensive gift like a watch, a good bottle of wine, or a perfume. One gives pasalubong when she comes back from abroad, either after being away for long time to work, or a short pleasure or business trip, or even simply after travelling around the country for a vacation.

It's really not so different from the American cultural practice of bringing back souvenirs from places you've visited to give to your friends, relatives and co-workers.
