It's very common. No matter how well you know them and "think" they like you, just assume they will steal from you if given the chance. They view you as a rich foreigner and they feel justified at stealing you blind. I often have ladyboys warn me about taking other ladyboys as they fear I'll take them home and they'll steal something. Even when I do the shoots, I never have more ladyboys (or guys or gals since I shoot them too) at a shoot than I have a pair of eyes to watch them. Since Poo is at all the shoots, that means I can take at most two models. Same story holds true when inviting people over--I limit the invites to no more than 2 at a time and I pick one to watch and assign Poo to keep an eye on the other. We even check the doors and windows after they leave to make sure everything is locked as we normally keep it--and there have been times when we've found a door unlocked which we normally keep locked. Can't have anyone coming back later and just walking in while we are away.

There is this incredibly hot ladyboy who has been begging me to take her home for zero baht every time I see her. I always tell her that I won't take her home for zero baht, but I will shoot her one day and pay her. The other night I'm at the bar talking to a ladyboy friend when this other one walks by. Knowing that all ladyboys know each other, I inform her about the situation and she doesn't speak about that ladyboy in particular, but does tell me that many ladyboys don't care what you pay them as they plan to steal more than any amount you'll pay anyway.

On top of all that, I can't tell you the amount of times I've heard ladyboys openly BRAG about how much money they've stolen from their last guy. It's viewed as a cool thing to do among the ladyboys and many are more than happy to tell me. I've even had ladyboys walk up and "show" me what they've taken! Don't know anyone like that? Don't be so sure...I will say no names, but I meet up with many folks from this site when they come to town and I've seen them go with some of the same ladyboys that have bragged to me about stealing from customers. So, word of warning, just assume they will and take all the precautions you can.

Once again, to repeat, my simple rule. Put everything valuable in the safe then relax knowing nothing can be stolen.

A real wake up call there Mousey.

Ive been thinking a lot about this suject since JD pinned it up and wondering how much of my holiday Baht has been evaporating away during Ladyboy sleepovers thse last 10 years.

Usually im a fairly trusting person and dont always stash it in the safe but leave it in my trousers or shirt which have both been hastily ejected upon entering the Bedroom and cast to the floor.

          frightning .....

          Nice post MM

remember also that a theft does not just have to be from your pockets, it can even come from long distance. the savvy guys that have been travelling in Thailand for a while know better than to send money to whores who don't stop working as hookers, but for every 1 of us there are 10 who get taken every day by some smart-ass ladyboy prostitute. Writing to lonely Joe from Nebraska or Nigel in London whom they met once for a week, and saying that she needs 20,000 baht because her brother is in jail or her uncle needs surgery; and then using the cash for some other stupid shit is just as bad as taking that $500 right from your pockets.

my rule of thumb, always; the money stays in the wallet until someone earns it in some way. if you have to keep the wallet in a safe, so be it, but keep the money out of the hands of anyone until they have done what you are paying them for.

First let me say that as far as crime Thailand is much much safer than most other parts of the world. Always hide your passport, money, etc. Do not put all of it in one place, if you think no one can get into your room safe or desk safe deposit box your nuts the people that work in the hotel can get into you safe no problem. The onle prob. ive ever had was once a Bangkok taxi driver gave me a counterfit 1000 bht bill.

My biggest concerns are my passport and airplane ticket.

Where to put those? I've assumed the Hotel's safe/safety deposit box is best. True?

Yes, I've traveled around a bit before coming to Thailand and I must say that this country is much safer than other places--a hell of a lot safer than the States which is where I'm from!

Most hotels will either have a safe behind the front counter or in the rooms.  Of course, I'd prefer one in the room.  Ask before you book.  That is where you will store your passport, plane tickets, credit cards, ATM cards, extra cash, etc.

As a very last option, leave your wallet in your pants pocket with only a little cash in it and stuff your cards, cash, passport, deep into your shoe and then stuff your stinky socks on-top of that.  I've done this on occasion when I've found myself staying at someone else's place unexpectedly.

                          Hey, funny story about theft.

Gat calls me most nights to see how I am if she doesn't see me at the bar. About 2 weeks went by when I wasn't at the bar and strangely I hadn't received the usual phone calls from Gat so I assumed she was probably in Singapore as she goes there often. Eventually I'm back at the bar and see her. She tells me the following story.

The day after I'd last seen her she went home with a Japanese man (many ladyboys prefer Asian men as they say they have smaller dicks which is a good thing for a ladyboy that's getting poked up the shiter for a living). Also notice that she points out that it was "the day after I'd last seen her" at the bar as the topic of conversation that night was how she hadn't had a customer in a long time and then quickly went towards her wanting me to take her home.

Anyway, after the dirty deed is done with her small endowed friend, he pays her handsomely before she goes into the bathroom to shower (ladyboys often shower BEFORE they have sex with you to wash off the scent of the last man they had that night, and AFTER they are finished so they are fresh for the next man). She exits the restroom, gets dressed, thanks him and leaves. She didn't say, but I'm sure we can bet that he thanked her too. She arrives back at the bar and reaches into her purse to check the time on her phone. NO PHONE! Her phone is no where to be found! She then looks to see if all her money is there and it's ALL GONE!

So, basically, she just PAID this guy to fuck her up the ass! My sympathy was a bit lacking as I couldn't stop laughing as she told me this story.

I have a simple rule.  Always get a hotel room with a safe.  Anything attractive (cash, wallet, cards, passport, camera, sunglasses, etc) is in the safe before the cutie gets in the room.  I only go out with cash in my pocket.  (no need for sunglasses and cameras in a nighttime bar).  When she enters the room she usually goes to the bathroom first.  As soon as she is in there my I quickly put all my cash in the safe and take off my watch and pop that in also.  After that I can breathe easily and not need to even think about security for the rest of the night.  When it comes to paying her I simply open the safe and take out the appropriate amount.

Simple, relaxing, safe.  The trick is to remember to do it even with a few beers under the belt.

Just common sense only Wisetraveller why it so difficult for some peoples. I you hotel room don't have the safe in the room you just do the same thing and use the reception safe.
If I have a doubt about my cutie I simply ask her to give me her ID card and this document go to the safe as well till next morning if she don't accept this arrangement she go back to her working bar. and I get another girl for the night.

                            Cheers

Take all the common precautions, use good sense, don't put your trust in a pay for play girl. Yet despite all this it is still going to happen to some of us. The fault, dear friends, lies partly at our own feet. We come to Thailand, become seduced by its charming women/ladyboys and loose sight of the fact they only view us as a "cash cow." We buy in to the myth that this is the Land Of Smiles and that the ladys will give us something that is missing from our lives outside of Thailand. Ain't so guys, in Thailand, it"s a dog eat dog world and I for one do not want to be a milkbone. Final words, just remember who you are dealing with and act and behave accordingly. Thailand is a great place regardless.

Someone made the point that hotel staff have access to your room safe. (although I have never lost anything from a safe). But, if this is so that just about robs us of our only line of defence. Any alternative suggestions anyone???
