To add to the "farang" debate - I understood that it derived from "farangset" which literally comes from "francais" (ie French) and dates from the time when the French wanted to turn Thailand (Siam) into a French colony, like Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, but the Thais did not agree, and threw all Westerners out of the country. Since then we have all been "tarred with the same brush" of farangset. Of course I am sure the Brits would have like Siam as a colony too, to go with Burma, India and Malaya (Malaysia & Singapore). Just my twopennorth' for what worth.

I thought we were happy to let Siam be left alone, it created a 'buffer' between French and British 'areas'
