Hi Paccie, Sorry for my late coming in on this but I have been swamped with work here. Glad to hear that you are on the road of recovery. Hope you did have travel insurance and hope also that they will cover your expenses as that was not exactly a cheap stint regardless of what it would cost in other countries.

Take it easy on exchanging body fluids before your immune system is up at full speed again. Even draining your own body fluid level might put you at risk. So, take it easy. Hate to lose a scout and buddy!

      All the best.

Cheers Chinaman. I could have done with your wise counsel. But it is behind me now, I am just regaining strength every day & look forward to some fluid exchanging events. I will be vetting partners carefully though.

(pacman @ Sep. 25 2010,19:08) The Penthouse has been more than a hotel to me for a long time. There is a real sense of family here & I was very heartened by the well wishes of all the staff when I returned.
Paccers....I shall jump in here and ask the question that many of us were perhaps thinking.

Have you completely exonerated the Penthouse Hotel and it's much maligned standard of poor hygiene with playing a part in your recent experience

To be fair, if one were to stay at the Penthouse for a week or two it would be fine. Pacman has been camping out there for months! I would say the same could happen to anyone in any hotel under the same circumstances.. I stayed at the August Suites ( a fairly new and clean facility) and after a week came down with a nasty infection which required hospital attention. Was it the hotel or was it just the change in climate, diet, water, late hours, and a sudden burst of over physical exertion and drain of bodily fluids? Hmmmmm. I would think the latter might have a lot more to do with it than the former. Then again both Pacman and I are ancient.

Actually, I sorta doubt many of us were thinking that - but I understand you've got your petty agenda to further, so why not use Pacman's health as an excuse to get in yet another dig?

OK Paccers, so do tell - did you find the strength to consummate with your little street urchin?

And at the risk of taking this off subject, could you give me a few tips about travel insurance? I've never purchased it and don't even know where to start. Should I call my insurance agent? Wait until I get to the airport?

Hope you're feeling back to your normal self. Perhaps you should just extend your stay until Feb 5 or so?

Thanks for giving me the chance to clear the air about that Pentire. And who among us is better qualified to ask just such a question given your unfortunate incident at this very hotel a few years back.

                        1) Yes, I can't blame the Penthouse at all. I find the Penthouse these days to be spotless, there is a 24 hour room cleaning service here available to clean up mess, change sheets, wash floors or just perform the routine daily clean at any time of the day or night. This policy was bought on in part by previous reports of inadequate standards. The management is very sensitive to such charges.

                        2) There is a misbelief that I actually went somewhere & contracted pneumonia, as if it was lying in wait in my room or in a dodgy bar somewhere. That is not how one catches it. There are many varieties of pneumonia, bacterial, viral & fungal being the generic types with many, many germs & viruses waiting to attack the lungs. What is needed is a lowered immune system combined with either extreme tiredness or a cooling core temperature that allows one of the infecting agents to take hold.

                        3) The bad news for visitors to LOS is that you are exposed to many of these infecting agents soon after arrival. Stay dry, get sufficient sleep, add a vitamin & mineral supplement to your diet & you should have nothing to worry about. My choice of hotel had nothing to do with my outcome, what did me in was ignoring the cough I picked up soon after getting soaked one night, continuing on with my party life style while in denial that there was anything wrong.

                        4) On the score of catching pneumonia, the local hospitals are overflowing with H1N1 patients (bird flu) & they are all considered at risk for pneumonia as the victims have compromised immunities. Rather than focus on how clean your hotel room is (albeit important), perhaps pay attention to warding off the flu, as in getting the latest flu shots & bringing a supply of Tamiflu to take while you are here.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Google would be a good place to start

Or if you have private medical insurance, they may have another division that specialises in this. Big multinationals like BUPA and American Express for sure do this.

I wanted someone soft & sexy to get back into the swing again. Julie ticked all the boxes. The moment I laid eyes on her walking along Beach Road I knew I had found the one. She doesn't play games, I told her I had been a little bit sick & I needed her to take care. She was fantastic, there is nothing she can't do. Just what the doctor ordered.

And at the risk of taking this off subject, could you give me a few tips about travel insurance? I've never purchased it and don't even know where to start. Should I call my insurance agent? Wait until I get to the airport?
I would ring your insurance agent (we call them brokers) & explain what you want. You don't want the cheapest most basic cover, they are full of get-out clauses, you want a reputable policy that will give you a high standard of cover including medical evacuation if necessary. And it should include a 24 hour hotline you can contact them on for any advice.

Do your own checking as to the company's reputation. You could even email the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital & ask them if they are an approved insurer. It costs nothing to check.

And be completely honest with the details of your prior medical history. No doctor is prepared to lie to save your cover if there is the slightest risk of him being caught out. And the insurer will leave no stone unturned looking for a way out of settling your medical costs. In my case, I will never again apply for travel insurance without declaring I have been hospitalised with pneumonia while in Thailand. I see little downside risk but the insurer will turn up that information in their due diligence & the very fact I didn't declare it is likely to see my claim rejected.

Hope you're feeling back to your normal self. Perhaps you should just extend your stay until Feb 5 or so?
I am feeling great. I will even have a celebratory beer in a few days, I just want to rest & give myself some healing time first. The GOTC is a remote possibility at this stage but one should never say never.
Despite the high cost of living, it continues to be popular.

Thank's for that response Paccers, in asking the question I obviously knew that you would relish the opportunity to defend the establishment where you have become extremely fond of resting your head.

Nice to read that you return to full health is fast approaching.
