The courts is Australia have just made a decision to allow a 12 year old girl to begin hormone treatment in the first steps towards becoming a boy.

    http://www.news.com.au/dailyte....00.html

It has sparked debate about maturity and the age you are able to make informed decisions. I tend to think this is too young, so much is already happening at this time of life without making life altering decisions. I understand that the earlier the treatment is started the better the results will be and that people know from an early age. I just don't think at this age you are mature enough.

If someone this young can make this decision why can't they also vote, drink, smoke, have sex etc..

    Interested to hear others thoughts.
I don't get it, is this a magic show?

It's probably too young for a child in the West, but in Thailand the decision is made much earlier.

The danger of allowing this person to continue to grow as a boy is that the damage soon will not be able to be undone.

I'm pretty sure that this child has recieved some intense therapy and counseling (which has almost certainly done more harm than good.)

If someone this young can make this decision why can't they also vote, drink, smoke, have sex etc..
I'm not sure where you derive the correlation between sexual identity and drinking and smoking! Maybe you were joking.

Its a hard one, if someone had told Me at 12 that is was going to be fucking ladyboys in my 40's, I would never have believed them.Do any of us really know at that age, perhaps some do, but to start taking drugs to change your gender, great if in 10 years she has made the right choice, buy if she hasnt, one fucked up young lady.Wouldnt want to be the Parent on this one.

At 12, I knew I was a boy, though it was never something I had to think about.

I think with parental consent, a 12 year old should be able to begin hormone treatment. But it should not be government funded.

I have no problem with the age of the individual. As we all have experienced, childhood is traumatic enough without adding gender identity abuse to the mix. All the ladyboys I have asked about when they knew they were different, told me they knew at a very early age and were raised as girls from early childhood forward. In all cases, it was the parents who recognized the need, made the decision and that is the way it should be.

Hey SB it's a girl who want's to be a boy!

I don't have any experience of talking to F to M transsexuals only M to F.

Most of the girls I have talked to have all know from a very early age that they were girls.
Typically the sort of age mentioned was 5, 6, or 7 years old.

I remember seeing a young ladyboy in a Thai school.  I'm not exactly sure how old she was  -  but probably 11 or 12.
It was pretty obvious that she was a ladyboy even though she was wearing boy's uniform.

As Stogie says once puberty starts - in a 12 year old it normally has - then the damage is already being done.
Male hormones won't stop the process but at least they will give the child the best chance of appearing male and maybe becoming male.

Pedants rule, OK. Or more precisely, exhibit certain of the conventional trappings of leadership.

Sorry I wasn't joking just thinking not really thinking it through. I was thinking more about what is considered the age of an adult in the Australia, the age at which you are old enough to decide on matters of personal choice.

Obviously this is fairly different from gender dysphoria which is not a question of choice but genetics. I suppose I was making the same mistake as the rest of the people opposed to this case.

                  Good question

Most transgendered people feel that way very young but just when can you say they are old enough to decide

Good point RoadRunner! I think that changing before puberty is the key to bodies proper adjustment and can effect growth patterns and body type in a positive manner for the individual.

Yeah i've heard this, but not too sure there is much truth in it..
One of ours at 11yrs just decided enough was enough and started hormones and dressing, much to her
families dismay! another was 19 before she realized!
Decisions made for them? -never the case with any one i know!...
Myself,i always felt this way,i can't remember any different! I had the chance to transition at 17 but
due to the fact i liked girls,i thought it was best i delayed until i was positive! Attitudes were different
in them days and i think it would have been bad for me on a social level...
Turned out ok in the end though
