(mardhi @ Aug. 28 2007,19:34) The Chinese restaurant in the Montien is considered way better than the one in the Marriott.
The Chinese restaurant in the Dusit is also highly rated.

Alibaba's (as Snick said Aladins) is considered to be the worst Indian in Pattaya.

      Cheers

I look forward to trying the other Chinese restaurants  you mention; but HOW can you call Albiba's the worst Indian in Pattaya ! 1) I have had far worse Indian in Pattaya; 2) Its where the Indians eat

I've eaten there many times, and last time brought Oz and LukyA - and we all enjoyed the food.

What are you using as your guide to GOOD Indian Food Snick? Please dont tell me Indian restaurants in the USA

I ate at Alibabas about 5 years ago and vowed I would never step foot in the place again.

Indian by Nature is much better food. Having said that its not exactly cheap but its good. Not excellent mind you but way better than Alibabas.

(SukhumvitRoad @ Aug. 28 2007,12:48) A couple of weeks ago I was steered into a place called Max's, an Italian joint on Soi Post Office. I had never been there before and was pleasantly surprised to find it really wasn't bad. Very comfortable dining room, not one of those standard Pattaya shitholes open to the street without any AC, fair prices, and the food was okay, too. Not gourmet,of course, but even 'okay' easily puts Max's into the top five places in Pattaya.
One of my favorite places. I eat at Max at least twice a week when in Pattaya. http://www.mrmaxservice.com/max/

There is a restaurant called the Cucumber directly across Pattaya Thai (South Road) from the entrance to Soi Day and Night Hotel. It's about a block away, and across the street, from TukComm between 2nd and 3rd Road. They have Thai food, some Italian, seafood, steaks, etc and even a decent burger. Nice indoor dinning room with AC and also outdoor dining. Like Max a little nicer than a lot of places.

On long trips when I get desperate for a touch of the US I go to Bob's B B Q. It is on South Road just east of 3rd Road on the north side of the street. They have good burgers that don't have that awful spicy taste you find everywhere in LOS. They also have ribs, imported steaks and some Mexican food. Nice dining room downstairs and upstairs with AC. Not cheap but not super expensive.

Certainly Not ! ( Although that is how I judge Chinese food).
Indian in Bangkok is much better than Indian in USA.

I think you had an off night -- or things changed in 5 years.
Next time we are in Pattaya lets grab a bite there, if it sucks I will pay.

I've tried Bob's three times now, hoping on each occasion that it would get better. It never did. Some of the food is okay --- the chicken fried steak was fine --- but none was particularly good. Worse, trying to order off the menu always turned into one of those irritating 'no have, no can' experiences we all know and love.

The really bad part was the staff at Bob's. It seems to be composed entirely of Thais too dumb and lazy to work anywhere decent. In between playing with their kids, eating, drinking, and joking with each other, they eventually waited on me; but not without making it clear that they wished I would just bugger off and leave them alone to talk to each other.

If it's American food you crave, I highly recommend instead the Great American Rib Company out in Jontiem. It's a branch of the ones in Bangkok and Hua Hin and is almost as good. The downside is that you have to go there by car.

(mardhi @ Aug. 28 2007,19:34) There are plenty of fine dining restaurants in Pattaya and typically at prices that are relatively cheap for what they offer.

Some examples to add to the list:-

Bruno's (on road between Pattaya and Jomtien) - European fine dining
Indian by Nature (next door to Bruno's)
Manhattan Steak House - premium price, good quality but not really as good as NY steakhouse as an example in JW Marriot in BKK.
Mantra - new restaurant within the Amari
Grill room in the Royal Cliff
The Chinese restaurant in the Montien is considered way better than the one in the Marriott.
The Chinese restaurant in the Dusit is also highly rated.
The Balcony restaurant in North Pattaya is good, but not really in the same league as the above.
Mata Hari (again on the road between Pattaya and Jomtien is a excellent value fine dining restaurant - $ for $ its probably the best value of all the places I know).

Alibaba's (as Snick said Aladins) is considered to be the worst Indian in Pattaya.

                  Cheers

In Pattaya, there seems to be more restaurants selling Thai food than any other kind of food. I've noticed that most cars in Pattaya have Thai liscense plates. Also, I have found more bars in Pattaya have footrails than in Bangkok. I always find it easier to get out of the Pattaya bars after a long night of drinking than getting out of the bars in Bangkok. Those footrails give me something to hang onto as I leave the bars.

I lived in Pattaya for 6 months about 3 years ago and still visit regularly.

I will start at the north end of town.  On the property of Amari Hotel facing beach road is Henry J Beans, you could set this place anywhere in USA and be right at home, excellent food also a very good Philipino live band 6 nights a week.

Next to this is the new Gullivers, same as the food at Gullivers in BKK soi 5.  This is also on Beach Road north of soi 1.  I have eaten at the Bkk location many times.

Head south on Beach Road and you will find Hardrock Cafe and Hotel.  I eat in the hotel everytime I go, many times.

Next, further south on  Beach Road to soi 7, up soi 7 about 1/2 block is another of my first stops, Tequila Reef.  It is air conditioned, has good Mexican food and others like BBQ ribs, chicken, etc.  It is owned by 3 American guys who are great guys.  Say hello to John if he is around.  I highly recommend this one!

Next if you continue south to Royal Garden shopping mall, you walk through to second road and adjacent to the mall, just north is Shennagan's.  There is very good dining, steaks, Sunday roast buffet with 7 meats and all the trimmings.  I highly recommend this also.

I guess that is my 2 cents worth, enjoy Pattaya!

                      A couple of corrections.....

Rob, an actual cook, who was the key guy among the three Americans involved in starting Tequila Reef, left quite a while ago. For some time now he has been a partner in the Great American Rib Company, mentioned earlier. The only original partner remaining out of the three TR founders is an accountant. The consensus among repeat visitors is that the place is now truly awful and should be avoided. I agree.

As for Shennigans, it moved out of the location next to the Marriott which you described several months ago. It will be reopening in a new location across Second Road and a bit to the north. The usual succession of soft opening dates have come and gone for the new location, but apparently it really will be open next month - sometime. The new location is on the second floor of a flashy new shopping mall with a Major Cineplex and a bowling alley, and it very much remains to be seen whether the comfortable pub atmosphere of the old place will survive the move into the new glass and steel quarters. At the very least, the prices will probably shoot up considerably.

That explains why Tequila Reef went downhill...I did notice, but did not know why.

Interesting, I had pretty good luck there but I always get a burger. One time it did come out almost rare when it was suppose to be medium well. But I like the burgers about as well the $$$$ ones at Hard Rock.

Heard good things about the Rib Company but didn't get to try the place.

I have to agree with the negative comments on Tequila Reef. Last time I was there it was bad. Heard similar comments from others.

That is a good way to put it. It sort of tastes like Mexican but it sort of doesn't taste like Mexican. But I will probably go back just for the change of pace.

Donnnnny, sorry I have to disagree with you here! Authentic Chinese food is quite delicious - but if you frequent the "westernized" Chinese restaurants, like many of those in Australia, USA, Canada, UK - then the taste has been "adjusted" for wider consumption.

While in Thailand I do eat Thai food, it is my 2nd favourite type (1st is Chinese, but then I grew up on it! ). Thailand is a wonderful place for food - all types of cuisine for low prices, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Italian, French, European, American, etc.

For those guys who keep only to the fast food places like KFC, McDonald's, Burger King and Pizza Company (formerly Pizza Hut), try to experiment a little!

Highly reccomend the "Dim Sum" at the Marriott Chinese restaurant. I believe only available on the weekends.

I assumed it was a good sign that I saw a lot of Chinese families dining at this establishment along with myself (American).
